Welcome to TSD! Definitely prefer the DE razors. My little experimentation with straights is also enjoyable.
Well I use both. I love my safety razor, but when Im in a big hurry (which is most of the time) I use my club razor. I wish I had time to wet shave all the time, but Im one that waits till I have to shave before I actually do it. Just lazy I guess. Dave
I'm a former cartridge user for many years—after initially learning to shave on a DE razor—and made the switch back to DE razors a few years ago. No more cartridge shavers for me. I'm now almost exclusively a straight razor shaver, but do breakout the DE razor on rare occasion.
I will never go back to carts. Having said that, carts have a space in my den. Sometimes I don't have time to go through my beloved ritual, and that's when a cart razor comes handy. Also, it is the only time I face/stick lather, so the only thing I change is the razor and the time consumption. This is not really a hobby for me, but a lifestyle that I enjoy and have enjoyed for over 20 years. I'm too old to change my ways
I think I have two Gillette Good News razors floating around my house somewhere. I only use those when I'm traveling, or when I was away on military orders. It's been a few weeks since I've even used my brush, creams, or soaps. I've been growing a beard to celebrate the end of my enlistment and have just been using shaving oil and a DE to keep the neck beard at bay and line up my beard on my cheeks. But when I decide that I've had enough of that, the brush, soaps, and creams will come back out.
I completely respect any guy that shaves with a straight razor. Its like having life or death in your hand at that moment, at least for me...lol. I have a straight razor, but must say I have never really taken the time to get any good at it. Maybe I should give it another try...
I'm nearly 60 and though I have just started using safety razors in May, I've already packed up all the Fusion, Dorco, Harry's, etc. razors, multi-blade carts and canned creams and I'm looking for a place to dispose. Probably take it all to the homeless shelters soon. btw - I vote Dogs.
I started out with cartridges, which were fine. I swtiched to DE's to save money (which, believe it or not, I have) and my own shave soap. I could not believe the difference, when I switched. BTW, dogs vs. cats- I prefer stuffed bears.
After 30+ unproductive years of using a Trac2 and dealing with not so close shaves and mega irritation. I'm strictly a "traditional" single blade shaver. My 3 all time favorite razors are Weber DLC w/BullDog handle, Gillette "NEW" LCOC w/griestshaving "FAT" brass handle and the ER 1924 "shovelhead" SE also with a BullDog handle. Unfortunately the involved learning curb and my complete lack of patience keeps me away from straights. But I will NEVER go back to a multibladed razor! I'm thinking of trying to get one of my Rolls Razor blades properly honed and giving the RR a try as a way to at least get a little bit close to a straight.
Tried shaving with cartridge razors, it's kinda like taking a shower without soap. Or waiting for the water to boil without turning on the stove. When we go to walmart and I be waiting for the wife, I go to the shaving isle and I yell "If King Gillette saw all this cartridge junk he'd curse the day he fathered a child" or " Can't a man buy real razor blades anymore?". Thankfully I'm a senior and can get away with it, or I've really lost my mind.
DE shaver over here. there are so many more options when it comes to wet shaving vs. cartridge. the different scents for one. it seems to make it less of a chore and more like aromatherapy. with that being said, there are a few people around here that do use canned goo. the great thing about this is that its your shave and there are no wrong answers. as long as you are happy with the results is all that matters.
