As in the title, I am looking to get a good starter watch so I can wean myself off of my phone dependency. That, and I think watches are just classy. Anyhow, I was wondering if anyone has any good recommendations for a watch. I'd love to have a Citizen or something but, as a full-time college student/single full- time dad, I need to keep my price range <$150. I'm hoping to get something that I can wear with everyday attire until I can get some more funds built up to buy a couple more watches. Please and thanks!
In an automatic go Seiko 5. Find a face that suits you in a size you like. Say 42mm. Or in a Quartz get a timex from target. Both can be had for $60. No need to spend the extra dough. You can do better but you will need to spend $600 to get a better watch.
Seiko has some great automatics for sub $150. They are tanks. You may also want to consider Orient. Very nice Japanese movements just like seiko. If you are leaning more toward dress watch Tissot or Bulova. For an absolute bullet proof watch try Casio g shock
Timex goes with everything. I prefer the look of the war era Hamilton's, but I'm not a fan of manual winding movements.
I just took a look at Overstock.com and saw a wide array of fine looking wrist watches from Bulova and Seiko for less than your target price. Both of these makers have been around for decades and to the best of my knowledge, they have excellent reputations.
I suspect one day you'll enjoy a Citizen, Brian. I hope so anyway. I'd definitely check out that Overstock.com site though. I have seen some awesome deals on there with regard to watches. That was good advice Mike offered...
I'm a huge Citizen fan and you can get a hour hand, second hand, and date watch that'll never need anything more than the sun to run for less than what you are looking to pay. My son broke a G-Shock
Can't go wrong with Timex. Stores don't always carry a very good selection. I suggest going to timex.com and checking out all the different styles.
+1 on the Seiko automatics. Great movements for a great price. I own several and I'm very pleased with them. The look and perform on a par with automatics 5-10x their price.
The Seiko SKX007 would be my choice hands down for about $150. IMO, it is the best mechanical sport watch for the money. You have unlimited aftermarket bracelet and strap options, allowing you to dress it "up" or "down." It's built like a tank, and it's a classy looking watch.
I agree spend the little extra for SKX007 instead of the Seiko 5. If you are willing to spend up to $400 the look for the Seiko Cocktail time.
I have to second the Citizen Eco Drive. I wear mine daily, it's a reasonable size although still larger than those of the sixties and earlier, it requires no battery replacement, keeps excellent time and it's classy enough for casual or dress wear. The model I have has a date function that I have to reset every other month, not a calendar function but merely a 1-31 date dial.
I have a Seiko solar that I like. No winding, no battery, been running for years. Mine was almost $300 but there are several under $150. Any watch these days will do the job well. Don't feel like you need to spend your max budget. I have $800 watches and $20 watches, wear them all and they all work.
