I wasn't really looking for another straight razor - heck, I already have four and I have a hard time working them into my rotation as it is...but, when I saw this razor by Henckels I really liked the look of it. Twenty-two dollars later I ended up being the hopefully-proud owner of it. I believe that the somewhat unusual spine design was to accommodate a guard but apart from that I really don't know much about the razor or brand so I guess I have the same 3-4 questions most people would have when buying something mostly based on how it looked; 1) How is Henckels as a brand w/in straight razors (and of course this razor model in particular), 2) Any issues you spot with the razor that my relatively untrained eye missed that would prevent it from being a good shaver, 3) Roughly how old is it, and 4) At $22 was this a good deal? Really looking forward to checking it out in person next week or so. Unless @gssixgun tells me it's not worth it he will more than likely see it at his place in the near future for a hone and a clean
Looks lovely - clean and with a nice straight edge. I've never seen a spine like that, but if Henckels made it it should work just fine. Nice score! p.s. Looking again I wonder if it's a frameback that has had the spine removed? Goshawk
Apparently it originally came with a detachable guard that was used if you wanted to style hair with it. Photo from SRP Here's a photo showing the thicker than normal wedge so that the blade with guard could be fitted: Photo from SRP
Hello, nice find ! To answer some of your questions, although others already did : 1) Henckels was (and still is) an axcellent brand w/in straight razors, this model was indeed for barbers as the guard implies. 2) no issues spotted, it looks good to go ! 3) No idea about the age... 4) At $22 this was definitely a good deal ! Cheers !
Razor arrived yesterday and actually looks really nice - to my SR-newbie-eyes. I do really like that spine
That's a very cool-looking Henckel! All the JA Henckels I've had the pleasure of using have been terrific shavers. The offset spine on your razor reminds me of this very old English (?) razor (nestled somewhere in my restore queue)—the top razor, not the lower...
