So on my Sears Craftsman Razor, the Piviot Pin is loose enough that I had a hard time stropping it today. I have peened rivets in the past, and have the right type of tools to do it. My question is on the scales. It looks like the back side of the scale is cracking. I am wondering if this is what is causing it to be loose. From the picture, does it look like this could be tightened without cracking the scales further?
Those pivot cracks are fairly common in some older razors. Yes, you can carefully peen both sides (light, repeated taps) until you remove the looseness in the pivot. And yes, these old scales can crack/split if one isn't careful. Don't ask how I happen to know this.....
Tap the pin with a spoon while having the opposite side of the pin rested on a hard surface. If you have a peening hammer it will work faster than a spoon. This procedure will tighten the pin if there are no other hidden issues.
