Menthol Monday July 6, 2015 Mongoose Shave #10 Shower, Mystic Water Soap-Yemaya, Neutrogena Face Wash B-3 Mongoose with UFO Godzilla Red Bronze Feather Professional #3 Doug Korn Prototype Florescent Amber 2 Band Proraso Green Tub Alum Block, Dickinson’s +Menthol, Gold Bond Green Lotion Chilled Proraso Aftershave Lotion Two passes to a near BBS shave today. The DK two band churned the Proraso into a mound of rich & slick lather. The Feather Pro blade is mighty smooth. I’m impressed with shave the Mongoose gives. I can’t wait to get a lighter handle for it.
Mark another great pic. How's it going with the Mongoose? With 10 shaves in you should be getting the big boy dialed in.
07/06/2015 Razor – Mongoose B2 with Jürgen Hempel Ti Blade – Feather Super Pro (4) Brush – Shavemac Silvertip D01 Lather – MdC Fougere Post - Witch Hazel and Fine L’Orange Noir A great 2 pass work morning shave this morning. Finished with a splash of Fine L'Orange and I am ready for Monday. I think.
30 day rule MDC Lavender Face Lathered Ladas blade Slim Adjustable set to 7 3 passes Today I reduced the time I spend loading my brush from a count of 5 to a count of 4. There was still enough MDC on the brush to make enough for 3 passes, but it would have been a little tight if I tried for a 4 pass shave. I will be going back to a 5 count tomorrow.
No shave today. The cut I keep reopening needs a day to settle down and heal. Fortunately the First Aid kit is well stocked. Have a great Monday!
July 6th, SOTD (Shave 4 of this focus) Two days’ growth Prep: Hot shower Razor: “Caveman” Cattaraugus Cutlery Co small razor Strop: Drygulch Chromexcel Horsehide/ Linen (10 linen/ 10 leather pre and post) Soap: Maggard’s Orange Menthol Brush: Spalted Maple Brush with Badger Knot Post Shave: Cold Water Rinse, Alum Block, Thayer’s Witch Hazel Aftershave: Maggard’s Orange Menthol Was running late today, so my goal was simply a SAS, with two passes and no touch up. I only loaded my brush for about 5 seconds, and had enough lather for both passes and then some. Did a N/S pass and a S/N pass. Managed to set the blade down too hard right on the line of my lower lip and skin, and cut myself pretty good. Ended up with a BBS on the face, and CCS on the neck and jaw. I won’t call it a DFS, but I managed to shave and shower in 12 minutes total. While this razor is fun to use, it is not as efficient as a longer blade. I didn’t realize how much I use the length of the blade along my jawline. It also gets swallowed by my 3 inch wide strop. I want to do two more shaves on this razor before going to the other two Americans in the focus. So far, no impact at all in using only 10 strokes linen/ 10 strokes leather pre and post shave. I was doing 40 linen/ 50 leather pre-shave and 20 linen/ 40 leather post-shave up until this month. (Once I am more familiar with the razors, I might try the no strop routine @HolyRollah suggested.)
Thanks Clint. I'm liking the comfortable shave it gives me in so few passes. It's efficiency is amazing. It's changing the way I shave...and I love it.
July Focus: Shave 2 and 3 Week one: A. J. Jordan Spike 5/8" July 1 - Shave 2 and 3 Prep: Hot shower, Aveeno 5:1 face wash Brush: WSP Silvertip (face lathering) Preshave: None Soap: Tobs Sandlewood Razor: A.J. Jordan Strop: @Drygulch Modern Barber Strop 24"x3" Growth: 5 day Post: Cold water splash, Clubman, Nivia Post shave balm Passes: WTG, XTG, WTG I found myself chasing a shave that didn't exist with this razor at this time. Not sure it is was a strop issue or hone issue, but a little tugging with the 1st pass that setup for problems with irritation later. As I progressed through the shave, the face got more irritated. No bueno. OK with as we move to a full wedge. Getting away from the loud razor. But I have a sweet handlebar goatee going...almost ready... Cheers, Eric
Yup, one where I set it down too hard on the edge of my lower lip that hurt bad enough to make me swear, and two around the bars on my mustache where I reopened previous cuts. Going too fast for sure.
Week two: No Name Wedge (need to get a nameme wedged wedge but I'm in the July no buy pledge ) July 1 - Shave 4 Prep: Hot shower, Aveeno 5:1 face wash Brush: WSP Silvertip (face lathering) Preshave: None Soap: Tobs Sandlewood Razor: No name wedge Spanish point Strop: @Drygulch Modern Barber Strop 24"x3" Growth: 5 day Post: Cold water splash, Clubman, Nivia Post shave balm Passes: WTG, XTG, WTG I was apprehensive in selecting this blade. I've really only had experience with the hollow experience. I enjoyed the wedge as it didn't jump on my neck as the hollow experience. One issue, I tend to miss my hair next to my ear - today I clipped my ear a bit. ugh. Oh well. I liked the three pass I got with the wedge felt solid and firm as I moved the blade across my neck and face. I did a s/n pass on my cheeks. Bbs! Cheers, Eric
Late post for 5 July 2015 30 Days with Maggard OC! Decided to switch up the blade test and include all the labels in the Maggard PIF box. Next up is ASCO super stainless! I was pleased with results, and had a good 2 pass shave per usual. So far I've tested Gillette 7O'Clock SS and SP, and now ASCO. Will use ASCO again tonight. The AS pictured is the house version of AV from the Kroger family of grocery stores. It is not exactly like AV, but a great value and one I use occasionally. Gonna go get ready for a Menthol Monday shave and will get caught up later, back after a long and fun weekend. Have a great Monday Evening!
Razor: Gillette Flare Tip (A3) Blade: Feather (4) Brush: WDC 5- Whipped Dog knot Boar/ Green Handle Soap: RazoRock XXX A/S: Lucky Tiger Day 6. The more I use this brush the better I like it. Loads well for a new brush. It's not a badger load yet, but it has potential. A good soap and a good shave with a excellent A/S. I like the old Barber Shop smell of this soap. Nice and hot here today.
