Im new to wet shaving and I own a Merkur razor. It isn't aggressive enough for me anymore. Or maybe it never was, but i would like to hear some of yalls opinions on some aggressive razors that are inexpensive or expensive, new or old, just some ideas. Thanks
I think the better your technique the easier you can get a better shave from a milder razor. you won't grow out of a mild razor, you'll get good enough to be able to use it(proficeintly). but if you'd like a more aggressive razor at an easy price look at Cadet or Matador.
They don't get more aggressive (by that, I mean razors with a lot of blade exposure) than the Mühle R41. If you can locate a 2011 model, it was even more aggressive than the current iteration.
iKon Shavecraft Tech is plenty aggressive. I agree with my good friend David, work on your technique! I get just as close of a shave with my EJ89 as I would my R41. Happy shaving! Kerry
You can also shim your razor by stacking razor blades with the edges cut off under your current blade. I'll add that vintage red tips are Gillette's most aggressive super speed. Otherwise, any of Gillette's adjustable razors can be opened up to a very, very aggressive setting. Most, if not all, SE razors and injectors are more aggressive than their DE counterparts.
Interesting thread as I have just sat down after a Shave with a Ladies Eversharp Injector Razor.....These have the Hydro Magic Head and are widely regarded as being one of the Milder Schick Injectors....But as folks are saying here good technique goes a long way with a Milder Razor as I got a remarkable Close All Over BBS Result with the Ladies Eversharp Injector..... I hate to say this but Mild or Not the Ladies Eversharp is quickly becoming one of my favoured Schick Injectors.... Billy
Those original three hole razor blades were thicker I think. They were made for use in the Old Types. I was very surprised at how aggressive the Old Type was. It takes a very light touch and just the right angle. I have just about mastered it.
My most agressive razor is a Barbasol Floating head. You'll not find one very cheaply. My most agressive easily purchased razor is this. http://www.shoeboxshaveshop.com/lord-racer.html Inexpensive and will mow em down. I love this razor. They were so cheap I bought three.
What type of Merkur do you own? I also agree that technique is more important than equipment. I own and have used both the MuhleR41 and the Merkur37C both are known to be rather aggressive. All I ever got from them was irritation and razor burn. My Weber DLC and Gillette "NEW" give me DFS+ or BBS shaves everytime with ZERO irritation or razor burn. I'd work on technique before buying a more aggressive razor. If however you want a REALLY wicked razor for cheap why not get a shavette. Their aggressive in spades!!!
From my experience... DE - Vintage: Gillette OLD DE - Modern: Merkur Futur wide open (actually I've never taken it above 3!!) SE - Gem MicroMatic Open Comb Just flat out aggressive - a straight!
I agree with those above who mentioned technique. I tried a 37c much too soon and hated it. Nearly a year later, I won a 39c here on the Den and it is excellent, or should I say my technique had matured enough to really appreciate the slant. Now I am in love with a 1959 Fatboy that I traded for and I use it at pretty aggressive settings 9/7/7 - and I usually get great shaves from it.
From a thread I started in October 2013 with some very good suggestions and opinions... aggressive razors
I believe its the 38c barber pole. Ive tried a few different blades and some help but i think i want something more aggressive now.
Find an inexpensive three piece razor and remove the comb or safety bar. So you just shave with the cap, the blade and the handle screwed together. It will be plenty aggressive for you.
It just hit me(I'm slow). How about a Rolls Razor. Their not to expensive, pretty easy to find and basically their a straight on a handle. Other than that @mikewood has a good idea. And its not as out there as it may sound. I've heard/read of many men in the old days, when straights were still pretty common, doing just that with a 3 piece razor. Good luck and please lets us know what you decide to go with and how it turns out.
