1. I'm probably late, but welcome to SOTD.
  2. It was indeed. Thanks. :happy005:

  3. Didn't enjoy the cold water shave? I found I got a lot less irritation when I switched. It did take a couple of shaves to get used to it though.
  4. Great later!

  7. For me it was the most irritation I have ever had on a shave, but to each their own.
  8. It has a refreshing BITE! Intense, but not painful, burn, while a strong simultaneous menthol chill.
I'm developing a rather strong attachment to the stuff post-shave….

    August 14
    Razor - 1964 Gillette Slim (J1)
    Blade - [IMG](3)
    Brush - Vie Long 12705
Soap - Saint Charles Shave Sandalwood
Post - Cold Rinse, Alum, Nivea

Day 3 on the Ladas and it's with the Slim at 9. To recap this blade, 5 seemed to be the right number to start, 7 made it rougher by a bit and added a lot of irritation. 9 could be suicidal or it could somehow smooth out. The Saint Charles Shave soap has, so far, under performed for me, refusing to consistently produce a persistent lather for more than one pass. So, lots to discover.

Went to the bigger horse today with the 12705 for more water and added some water to the puck. The resulting load seemed to be thicker and better than before. The first lather was nice. Good coverage and persistent enough to count. The shave on the 9, however, was miserable. Opening up the Slim on the Ladas just made it a rough and uncomfortable shave. Bad enough, in fact, that I only did the right half on 9. I felt the burn starting before I was even finished. So, cranked it down to 5 for the second half of the first pass. Amazing difference. The blade stayed responsive and gave good feedback but the irritation was clearly less. Lathered again for the second pass and found the soap lacking again. By the time I had done XTG on the right side I had to lather the left again. It just would not hold up. The second pass was nice and smooth at 5 so I think I can confirm the settings for Ladas and Slim. It's a 5 for the butter zone, 7 can work, and I suspect 3 would be ok. Lathered the neck for a finishing pass there and again had trouble with persistency in the lather. Not enough product loading perhaps? Finished with a DFS and the alum confirmed worse irritation on the right side.

Other than fighting with the soap and that nasty first half-pass it was a good day today. Tomorrow I'm switching to a boar for the attempt to get STC to work and I'll switch blades too. Not sure what I'll go to. I'm thinking either Bic or Sharp Star.
  11. I've been considering that one. I appreciate the quick review. I may be adding that in the very near future.

    Stirling Synthetic Brush
    Stirling Glacial Wintergeen Shave Soap

Post Shave- Cold water rinse followed by Stirling Glacial Wintergreen Witch Hazel & Aloe followed by, guess what? Stirling Glacial Wintergreen Aftershave splash :)

Great relaxing frigid shave tonight was what I needed tonight as I am not feeling too great due to the fact that I am attempting to quit smoking cold turkey.

Voskhod blade knocked down 2 days of growth like it was nothing. I am really enjoying these blades and I think they may just replace my beloved feathers but we will wait till next shave to find out as feathers only last 2-3 shaves max for me but this blade is still as smooth as day 1.

20 minutes post shave and I am still frozen :Animatedfrozensmily::Animatedfrozensmily::Animatedfrozensmily::Animatedfrozensmily::Animatedfrozensmily::Animatedfrozensmily:
  13. The shave may be frigid but my heart is aglow with another person discovering the greatness of Voskhod. Makes me want to dance!

  15. I can, but my knot is twisted(my fault; I tried to lather through a puck of soap in one sitting when I first got it, swirling it dry on a towel between lathers. Gave it a permanent tilt, LOL).
I understand what you mean about the knot splitting into 4 or 5 parts; mine does that. I think it's just the nature of this knot.
Below left is the 1470, and right is my 1460, which is the exact same knot in a different handle. If I remember correctly, they are both one of semogues highest grades of knot. Mine are wonderfully soft.
If you do a search here and on other forums, you will find many men who absolutely love Semogues for face lathering, particularly because of their softness.

Sounds like you wanted to breaking in as fast as possibly =P

The splitting of the knot makes it very bad for facelatgering, but it performs very well bowl lathering.

I bet many semogues are good for face lathering. One of those days I'm gonna buy a semogue SOC brush

  19. Good morning Ladies and Gentlemen, and welcome to my Saturday morning shave.

Today was a day of first. I used vintage shaving tools for the first time, I used one of my grandfathers razors for the first time and I also used a vintage Gillette Super Stainless for the first time. I also used a shaving soap from Joshua Tree soapworks as a bath soap for the first time, but that is hardly worth mentioning.

The first thing I noticed was that the razor and blade combo was very loud and provided excellent audio feedback. The razor had a nice balance to it, although I wouldn't mind a thicker handle, it had a very nice feel to it.
The blade had almost a perfect combination of sharpness and smoothness to make this a really enjoyable shave. In a way it reminded me a bit about the Iridium Super blade, just slightly better and chattier :)

The soap was outstanding as always, and did without question contribute to the performance of the razor and blade.

The Lucido aftershave was my daily performer, before I replaced it with Witch Hazel. It is still a wonderful aftershave that does what it is supposed to do.

    Razor: Grandpa's
    Blade: Gillette Super Stainless
    Brush: L'Occitane Plisson brush
    Soap: Brutalt Bra Barbersåpe
    Aftershave: Lucido
I also put on a little of the old Proraso balm. It was not needed, and it is not a very good performer. But I love the smell
