Ingrowing hairs - whiteheads

    Hi.

I have had a problem for a number of years now whereby I get whiteheads shortly after shaving. They are limited to the places where the hair tends to change direction of growth, i.e. just below the corners of my mouth, upper lip etc. This is why I think that they may be caused by ingrown hairs (there does usually seem to be a hair dead centre of the whitehead).

I shave after showering, use a shaving brush and a single blade safety razor. I also exfoliate the skin in the shower most days.

I have tried a variety of products and thought that the safety razor would do the trick, but it doesn't seem to have changed the situation at all.

I am not too fussed about being either cleanly shaven or having a small amount of stubble, but do not want to grow a beard. I had considered using electric razors but these seemed to just pull the hair from my skin, irritating the skin and causing a rash.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Many thanks

A few things that have helped with my ingrown hair and folliculitis issues on my scalp
-NO ATG in trouble areas. EVER. REALLY. I do 3 WTG passes on my problem area on the back of my head.
-Shower after you shave. I think with my hard water I wasn't able to wash all of the soap residue off at the sink. I now do a quick wash and wet towel pre shave, then shave, then shower.
-TendSkin. It's a little pricey, but nothing else has worked nearly as well. I'm about to start experimenting with some homemade recipes to try to save some money and maybe add a little scent.
-Synthetic Brush. The softer bristles combined with the fast drying seems to have helped with my irritation, and folliculitis is caused by irritation of the follicles.

Sometime during the day use some Tea Tree Oil and take a Vitamin A pill. Do not use the Tea Tree Oil anytime around shaving. Tea Tree Soaps are available as well. Give your face a good wash during the day but not around shaving time. Kills all bacteria in the skin and will make your shaving more enjoyable. I was on Retin A and Acutane and actually this treatment is best for acne related problems.

I am a big fan of using Witch Hazel...I find it has worked wonders on my skin. Also I only do a two pass WTG shave.

I started using a DE because of ingrown hairs. I only shave WTG. I was doing 1 WTG pass and 1 XTG pass, but I found that I get just as close of a shave without irritation by doing 2 WTG passes. I also shave with cold water, which keeps my pores closed and reduces irritation. The razor does not glide as smoothly using cold water, so I started using a pre-shave oil. I splash my face and create my lather with cold water, but I rinse my razor with warm water (probably close to room temperature).
