Who makes the best Sandlewood scented shave cream and why? Also, what would you follow it up with in terms of an aftershave preparation?
Proraso Sandalwood cream (I never tried the soap version) to me is the nicest. I never tried any sandalwood-scented aftershaves so I can't comment on that question.
"Best" is subjective. My favorite is D.R. Harris sandalwood. Their matching a/s splash or milk is a natural complement - my preference is for the milk, which is a lot subtler than the very powerful splash.
I can't speak for AS follow-up, I just use what I feel like for the day and don't have anything paired to soap/cream. I do have some Crabtree & Evelyn Indian Sandalwood cream. The look and feel of it reminds me of C.O. Bigelow's with a Sandalwood scent.
Unfortunately, Sandalwood is one of the scents for which each manufacturer has its own interpretation. I have used TOBS, Proraso, and Cyril Salter. All had a very nice woodsy scent, but each was a different scent. You could spend quite a bit of money searching for the one that fits you the best. My recommendation is to see if you could trade for a few samples before buying a tub that did not work for you. The same could be said for other scents such as Rose, Cedar, Lavender, etc. Don't mean to rain on the parade but manufactures do not have a "baseline" scent from which to start.
I have several (6-7) sandalwood soaps, all from different makers. No two smell alike. And as @Jerry-built Hustler said, "best" is subjective.
I'm a fan of Proraso and TOBS sandalwoods. Both scents are nice, both creams are above par. Best is subjective and I've tried creams that have good scent and terrible performance or terrible scent and good performance. Proraso and TOBS have both a good scent and good performance, IMHO. YMMV. I haven't found a decent aftershave that pairs with them. I'd suggest if you are using TOBS to stick with TOBS balm or splash as a matching scent.
I have both Proraso Sandalwood soap and TOBS Sandalwood cream. The TOBS has a sandalwood scent that is several times stronger than Proraso's. I like both, but if you really like the sandalwood scent, go with the TOBS.
I have only tried a few; proraso,AOS, and stirling....IMO best sandlewood "scent" is stirlings vanilla sandlewood, but for straight sandlewood I would say AOS followed very closely by stirling.
TOBS Sandalwood is a good cream, I have to say I like the TOBS creams better than the Proraso for performance. I agree on the scents being different though. I haven't tried any other Sandalwood creams.
Kind of like the Arnold Palmer drink-I was told it can have a different taste depending on where you buy(or order)it.
I really like Crabtree and Evelyn Sandalwood. It is also convenient that we have a C and E outlet store nearby.
To my nose, Cyril Salter is the closest to a true sandalwood scent. The aftershave that meets the same criterium is Meehan. Now, as others have mentioned, there are different "takes" on sandalwood. I like the DRH also. Their AS matches the soap quite well. Another is Simpsons cream. It's nice but not my top choice.
