Someone told me the Shenanigans had started already.


This month going to focus on Wedge grind straight razors. Actually near wedge grinds, as I don't have any full wedge grinds.

1. Dubl Duck Satin Wedge- Shave ready and in rotation.
2. Union Cutlery Spike razor. New Ebay find, in pretty good shape, but won't cut arm hairs. Going to hone it, and possibly sand and polish it.
3. ??? My mission is to find a purchase another razor. ("But Honey, I told the guys I would. So I have to!) Near wedge, prefer American.

Going to use my other badger for the month. This one is a little more floppy, but it loves the B&M soaps. Going to rotate through my 10 open tubs of soap, although a couple of those might get thrown out if they don't perform better. Aftershaves are open.

For skills, two things this month. First, figure out the ear to Adam's Apple strokes. Second, try and keep with the two pass shave.

First I want to say a huge thank you to Chris @Bama Samurai for getting and keeping these threads going! They are without a doubt my favorite thread on TSD! Also, it really says something when the thread opened about five and a half hours ago, in the middle of a work day and the thread already has over 60 posts. Going to be another great month in the 30 Day thread!

I will be joining in the OCtober fun with my Cadet OC.


It was a very generous gift and I plan to spend the month getting to know it as well as possible. I plan to try out multiple blades, starting with my top four to see if they will all perform as well in the Cadet as they do in the L6. Tomorrow will be the GSB. A blade that so far has loved me and treated me well and hopefully will do the same as I get acquainted with the Cadet. I will be using both my VDH boar brush as well as a Fine Badger by AOS. Looking forward to giving it a go. I plan to get a bowl to replace my blue and green VDH bowl because I really do prefer to bowl lather right now.

Otherwise, I am definitely looking forward to reading all the other focus posts going on, especially all the OC and blade threads. I have to admit I will also be reading with interest the straight razor guys, not because I think I will ever use one (I really do not have the steadiness for it), but because I am so darn jealous both of the ability and the beautiful razors!

OK so shave #1 with the Schick type C. After yesterday's painful experience with the Type B yesterday I tried the C type today. Youch! Not as bad as yesterday but still not good. My face burns all over from the hair ripping personna blade. I may toss both personna blades now that my Schick blades have come in the mail and forget trying to punish myself with these blades again. They can be my post apocalyptic blades. The last blades on earth. Whipped up some Truefitt &Hill west Indian lime with my boar. Fought the razor burn with Nivea sensitive post shave balm.

You can bring those Personnas over and I'll add them to the Flying Eagles and Tigers I have in stock. You're welcome.

That's an awesome looking razor! I'll be honest I'm not an open comb fan, but your Cadet has me intrigued. I'll be following along.

I bet you'll have a better shave with the Schick blades, the same thing happened to me with Personna blades.

I've been having great shaves all month with the schick blades in the G type. I decided to try the personna and I hate them.

The picture makes it look like it is rose gold or something, which it was not supposed to be. It is a good classic silver. Hmmmmm Oh well. The extent of what I know about it is based on what I have learned by reading some posts where people have used it. Hopefully it wont take me too long to get figured out.

This one is more accurate but still has some tint.

FYI. It's 8:30pm PST well past my bedtime, my wife is out of town and in 25 minutes I'll be spinning the wheel to pick our September Newbie Give-Away winner!!

I'm in for OC - this Gillette New SC as well as a Gillette New LC. I'll pass on the menthol...I think it smells like cat pee.

It's nice no matter what finish it is. My understanding is they can be aggressive but tamed. I like it. Blade selection will be interesting to see what works for you. I'm guessing something like a Personna Lab Blue, or one of the popular Russian blades. Definitely nothing ultra sharp like a feather.

Don't know much about techniques yet, still pretty new to the game. But I sure do love me some Roll Tide!

Your suggestions are the exact ones I plan to use. I am starting with the Gillette Silver Blue, then the Ladas, the Voskhod, and the Personna Lab Blues. After those we shall see where we go, but definitely not a feather.

You have come to the right place!

First, if you have not already, go to the first post of this thread and read the post linked at the top about the 30 Day Rule. The process is simple, but very effective. Next, figure out your equipment. I spent 30 days on here doing a blade search going through part of a sample pack from tryablade.com It was really helpful because not only did I figure out some blades that worked, since I was also participating in this thread I was learning and reading about technique as I went. Third, always remember the 3Ts Technique, Technique, Technique or Technique Trumps Tools. It is all about using your equipment and figuring out the best method and then doing it over and over (hence the 30 Day Rule) so that it becomes ingrained. No better place to learn than in this thread. I know others would agree.

Feel free to ask questions. Talk about issues you are having. Detail your progress. This place is full of people willing to help! Last but certainly not least, have fun and join in the Shenanigans that occur (oh and they will occur frequently)!
