I smoke all the time really. I'm a pretty heavy pipe smoker (3-8 bowls a day depending, but usually 3-4), and I've never noticed a problem. Pipe tobacco doesn't tend to make you smell bad like cigarettes or cigars (though I do like a good cigar), even the non aromatics. Also, AS and balm scents are made to be weak in terms of how long the scent remains noticeable. A little good cologne however will clear up or at least cover up the smell of pipe tobacco very well, and in some cases, the two blend quite well and give you a very masculine smell. I've also never noticed it to effect MY sense of smell either, and I've never lost the enjoyment of the smells of my soaps, balms, AS and colognes. And some soaps even use the scent of tobacco, like Synergy Cavendish (one of my faves) from How to Grow a Moustache; which I know smells much like my Captain Black Dark tobacco! lol
I smoke mostly Virginia blends, the smell is not on strong. My wife thinks it's OK for men to smell like Pinaud products and Danish tobacco, so I am set!
I'm like Bama Samurai, I smoke mostly Virginia blends or VaPers, and they tend not to smell as much as some others. But I don't smoke before work, and seldom before a night on the town. If I do have a bowl before going somewhere, I change clothes. Plus, I nearly always rinse my mouth well and gargle with warm salty water after smoking. I do this more from a hygiene standpoint, but the salty water seems to reduce any smoky smell on my breath. I never inhale, so that also helps.
Orlik Dark Strong Kentucky in a MM Country Gentleman, my favorite of my three Missouri Meerschaum pipes. It's got a large bowl, and I ended up rubbing out a third flake for a 1.5 hour smoke while slowly reading the newspaper.
Long day... And tonight, no photo... But I enjoyed some aged Navy Flake in the bent Kaywoodie. It was just right. Back on my regular routine. Autumn is the best of the seasons for tobacco!
I start school late today because conferences go late tonight. Sneaking in a predawn bowl of the Captain.
Attention Latakia guys... http://www.pipesandcigars.com/pipe-tobacco/72989/leo-by-lane-limited-pipe-tobacco/?sourcekey=PC2W
Tempting, but with 20 tins on the way now I think I'll curtail new purchases for awhile. At least until SWMBO won't notice.
Gatsby Luxury Flake in the Lorenzo Novar before dinner. A great evening, the humidity is extremely low for the Houston area and we are going to have beautiful weather for several days.
I took the Captain and Kriswell Clipper out for a walk with the dog this afternoon. I think I got a vanilla taste this time, but it still reminds me of marshmallows.
You may have just cleared the ghosts of the Latakia in the early day 1888. Eventually, I suggest a 3 pipe rotation. One for Virginia, one aromatic, one Latakia. It will make it easier to discern nuance in the leaf.
