Quiet? Efficient? Pain free? I want that 4 minutes of my life back... Do carbon blades sound different than stainless as they cut?
Yeah I know, boring stuff. Don't worry, with a full month of the Feather SS coming up you'll have plenty of entertainment. I may start charging for my posts when that starts. Carbons sound different to me in most cases. There's a louder feedback to them. The silver ones are a bit quieter than the blues, such as the Black Beauty. And of course, the horrid carbons like Flying Eagle and Tiger 3H sounds like they're tearing flesh off because, well basically, they are. For this blade to be as quiet as it was is a bit of an anomaly from what I expected, though it could be partly the razor too.
Quick thread rules check - Things we don't talk about: Politics Religion Neal's Rapira Shave Other Forums and People Judges, may we have a ruling please? We may have to send the offender to seg!
Yeah I know. I'll overlook the violation this time. Sometimes you gotta use what's out there. Of course now that you mentioned it my mind instantly starts saying "why yes, that would be quite the challenge. Put the Classic in the Rapira and see what it does........no really, do it now. What's the worst that could happen?" And suddenly @Drygulch and I are having the same conversation in our heads with my voice! As if the voices in my head aren't enough already.
Thanks for asking Herm. Today was my first shave with a Goodwill. ...and yes, the internal posts on the cap does provide another level of alignment. I do find that it certainly could reduce any "play" that might normally occur. I would also expect that if any of these near-100 year-old razors experienced a ding or was dropped, it could potentially cause some alignment issues. My initial shave with it today provided no distinct alignment problems. I did notice that tightening down on the handle results in some blade "chatter" when shaving, but that mostly cleared up on the 2nd pass as I paid more attention to making sure I got the lather correct on my face. Also, the handle seemed to loosen up on me from time-to-time. I felt it when rinsing and flicking off the soap/water. Those things aside, this razor reminded me of the New LC. All in all, the Goodwill gets close to the same results, but a few steps short, and nowhere near the smoothness of the LC. YMMV, this was also my first shave and I hope to have a better feel for it at the end of the week. Cheers! RT
WD synthetic 20mm Proraso red in the tub ball end triangle hole tech(bic blade) Y2 Super Speed (dorco 300) Clubman AS Nivia sensitive post shave balm Jumbo styptic pencil I did both a head shave and a face shave today. I did the head shave first. The dorco did very well on M head. I cut myself some and i missed a few spots but this was the first DE head shave ever for me so I think I did pretty good. the face shave was next. The Bic blade was a bit harsh right out of the package. Felt like a feather to me in its harshness. I did 2 passes WTG and XTG with one bleeder on my neck where the hair changes direction and a minor burning feel all over. The club.an stung a little on my face and only yelped on the places I nicked myself on my head. I soothed it with the Nivia. This is probably the most I've used the styptic I one shave. I'll get the head shave down some day. It probably isn't going to be a permanent thing anyway. Maybe seasonal.
I look forward to you impressions. I've had two Goodwills (I believe #160) and noticed that the head had considerable play, meaning that I had to hold it in place when tightening or it could be severely skewed to one side or the other. I don't like having to be that cautious.
Mixed it up a little today as I wanted to test the Crown and Sword straight to see how good I did on the hones, and also wanted to try out the Feather Pro in the Mongoose in order to nail down my November Focus. Prep: Face wash with MRGLO, hot towel. Soap: Soap Commander Commitment Brush: Stirling Kong Razor(s) Crown and Sword ERN 1720, Mongoose B3 with Feather Pro (1) Strop: SRD Lynn Abrams Modular Paddle. Post: Stirling Orange Chill WH/Aloe. After: Myrsol F/Extra. Yesterday I honed up the C&S from a state that wouldn't even shave arm hair. I set the bevel with a Naniwa Chosera 1000, then progressed through the superstones 5000, 8000, 12000, and then stropped on a felt sprayed with .5 diamond spray, scrub leather, smooth leather. I did a cheek and jawline pass with the C&S and think I did a pretty good job. Very smooth, and efficient. I switched to the Mongoose and did a regular 3 pass and touch up shave. It may be me, but I felt like the Pro did a better job than the ProGuard. I didn't need very much touch up, and caught the baby with Zero irritation. Splashed on the Stirling, and 30 minutes later I have one of the smoothest shaves ever. I really want to use the Goose exclusively in November so to keep it interesting I may commit to using a brush and soap that aren't so automatic.
Today’s shave a 2 pass near BBS was very cold. Face lathered the Frostbite with the Red Druida brush. Jose O’Cana’s knots have quality equal to those made by Lee Sabini (Paladin & M.F.) and Aldo Sui (The Varlet). Krampert’s lathered cold and creamy in seconds. Mongoose gave me plenty of audio feedback, and some slight tugging so this blade will make an early exit. My icy Witch Hazel was overdosed with Menthol Crystals. Some “Menthol Maniac” went nuts with TSD Menthol Crystals. Had to take a ‘Menthol Break’ between the Mentholated Witch Hazel and the Gold Bond Menthol Moisturizer. Ended another Frosty Shave with a couple of generous handfuls of Frostbite Aftershave. Hope your Monday is going great!!
