Hi... I am looking for some blade options to sample. Been shaving with a DE for a few months and with the throw away for many years. I have tried (in order of enjoyment) Astra Platinum, Bic Chrome, Shark Super Stainless, Derby Extra and Shark Super Chrome. The shark Super Chrome was not a good shave for me. Pulled and cut and the Derby was just slightly better. The Astra and the BIC Chrome Platinum give me the best shaves with the Astra the best. I use an EJ DE89 and shave about every third day. Any suggestions for additional blades?? Thanks....
Ladas persona labs feather Gillette silver blues there are tons of blades, and normally a brief description of the results in the "shave of the day" threads. it's fun to see the equipment folks use daily. pics are nice also.
Gillette Platinum & Silver Blue Personna Med Prep from Robbins Instruments Rapira Swedish Supersteel & Platinum Lux Gillette 7 O'Clock Green Super Stainless Polsilver Super Iridium
I have a handful of blades samples that I haven't used yet but the one that really impressed me are the Polsilvers. Just smooth and sharp. I'm using them in all my razors and the results have been very consistent. Formerly the Astras were a favorite. Derbys seem to work in some razors and not in others. Merkur blades definitely don't work for me. I'm thinking you should get with Tryablade and get a couple of blades of each type you think might work and then you can get firsthand knowledge of what works for you.
As one who gets good shaves from a Bic: Dorco-301 is a good blade for me; Dorco-300 is not. Bolzano is not quite as sharp, to my sensibilities, but may make up for it in smoothness, particularly in more aggressive razors. It's my preferred blade in a FaTip. Treet Platinum works well for my beard. Treet carbon blades would probably be my first choice overall if I could get multiple shaves from them; I cannot.
I agree with the above to tryablade.com I got a good amount for pretty cheap. Found for me in order that works best in my 39c on my face.... Personna platinum reds Gillette silver blue Feather new high Gillette 7 o'clock yellow.
The key to comfort in DE is more about technique than equipment...but since you asked for a recommendation, I would suggest Gillette Silver Blue, Rapira Swedish Supersteel or Voskhod. When shaving, make sure the cap of the razor stays in contact with your face, this will insure a low blade angle and help to prevent irritation. Any blade when used at a high angle will scrape and irritate. Good luck!
English Wilkinson Sword blades are among my favorites. My personal wetshaving goal is to try all the blades. Probably won't ever happen, but it sure is fun (mostly! Lol!) trying! Good luck on your perfect-for-you blade hunt!
Another vote for Voskhod and Feather.. Then, try also KAI. KAI is my preferred blade nowadays, but it is not cheap.
Blades are very much YMMV. But I have tried almost all the mentioned blades here and my top tier list is Rapira Swedish Supersteel, Eddisson Stainless and Vikings Sword.
YMMV is right. Here are my top few: Astra SP Gillette 7 O'clock blue Personna Lab Rapira Lux Platinum
I started out with personna med blades and they really great use them for a while but after reading about different blades I decided to try Feather blades and after use them for a month, I say I found the right blade. I had a friend that sent a package of "Kai" blades I think they just as good maybe better than Feather. But shop around for the best one for your skin and gives you the best shave. Kai blades are a little on high $ side but well worth it, last longer than Feather so I think worth the extra few $. Try the high end see what you think. Good Luck!!
Just for fun you may wish to pick up some Baili Super blue stainless blades. A friend recommended them, saying he gets excellent shaves using them. I was reluctant to order some, as the price was unbelievably cheap at $6.00 per hundred with free shipping on Ebay, and how good could a blade at that price be? I ordered 100 thinking if I didn't like them which I had already decided I wouldn't, I could always give them to my friend. Long story short, they are excellent, and for me comparable to an Astra SP. Have over a dozen shaves on the first blade, and it's still as good as the first shave. Anyway my friend won't be getting my Baili blades anytime soon.
