Good day gentlemen. I don't know if anyone has done this yet, so I would like to introduce you all to South Africa's cheapo DE razor...the Lion. These are found almost every where in the country and most pharmacies and supermarkets stock them. The pack contains one DE Razor with moulded plastic handle, and a 5 pack of Lion Brand razor blades. The package is very cheap costing between R12 and R24 depending on where you shop. The razor has the Lion wording moulded into the top plate and is of a closed comb design. The shave is not too bad considering the price, especially with Lion Brand blades, BiC blades where a little agressive for my liking when used in this razor. If anyone has any questions, feel free to ask them. Regards, H
It is quite mild, however some brands of blades tend to be harsher. But it is mild, especially with the lion brand blades.
That's pretty cool actually that you can find the Lion in most supermarkets and pharmacies, the price makes it very appealing.
Looks just like my Gillette Sterling. My Gillette came with a 7oclock sterling blade and the razor for about $2.50 USD. I eBay ordered it from India. I don't like the shave with it personally. All these very cheap new DE razors look exactly the same except for the top plate stamping. @NCoxSTL's rapira looks exactly the same as well.
Yep, they are all really one and the same, just stamped different for each brand. They look deceptively mild but man are they beasts. As I've mentioned in a couple of my shaves with the thing they don't bend the blade as much as "normal" razors leaving a very aggressive exposure. That and the fact they are almost impossible to align the blade in and you have a wild ride. Lion actually isn't a bad name for it....wild and you gotta watch the claws. Imagine the Tiger 3H blade in this thing.
Agressive can be an understatement...my neck looked like I had been to war after trying some BiC blades. Anyhoo, here are some pics of the Lion Brand blades.
Maybe there are some other Saffas on here that can help, so far the only local shaving cream/soap I could find is Reitzer's Perfect Shave Shaving Soap, although most shops stock the international brands. Perfect Shave smells pretty oldschool, you'd most likely conjure up memories of your grandad when you smell it. Creates a nice lather using a badger brush, lubrication is okay and the lather lasts well. I've attached a picture of both the label and the ingredients list.
Hello I'm Ton and nw here, living in south africa and have a Lion. still find a bit aggressive but otherwise a good knife. I think it's really just a Baili knife BT133 made in China you buy them for 33 cents (500st) I also have the baili BD176 . and is much milder sorry for my english'm a Dutchman
