For years, I used a Braun foil shaver, which at the time was considered one of the best electrics made. I thought that the shave I got from it was great. The batteries finally gave out, and I couldn't find an electric that I liked, so I decided to try wet shaving again. That was about eight years ago, and I haven't looked back. I now realize that the "great shave" that I got from the Braun was actually a poor imitation. I moved on from canned goop via VDH's brush and soap. That VDH brush has been like the old Timex commercials -- it takes a licking, and keeps on ticking. I started shaving with a straight razor about a year ago, and now understand why so many of our ancestors had mustaches and goatees. Being retired, I use the straight razor most often, but still shave with a Fatboy when I'm in a hurry. If I'm being real lazy I use Barbasol rather than soap and a scuttle. I can do a three pass shave with the Fatboy in about the same time that it takes me to a single pass with a straight. I'm about ready to graduate to a new brush, and giving serious consideration to the 24mm Whipped Dog synthetic in the goblet handle. After that, I need a good strop to replace WD's Poor Man's. Then, I suppose that the last hurdle will be honing the blades myself.
I like your comment about the goatee and mustache. If I was just shaving my cheeks and neck I think I could do with a SR . Anyway, welcome to the Den! Great bunch of people here!
welcome to the den, I do not have a WD brush to compare and i know they are very good but this brush from stirling is just knocking my socks off every day, it is a 26 knot and the lather i can whip with this after my shave is done is still as good as some of my other brushed can do from the start. http://www.stirlingsoap.com/factory-seconds-synthetic-shave-brush-26mm/
