So far I've identified two different scent categories I like. One is bay rum and everyone seems to make them. The other is leathery/tobacco/smokey type scents which seem fairly rare by comparison. Further, I'm really only interested in tallow based ones. So what I'm looking for are your favorites of each type so I can narrow down my candidates in one instance and build up a list in the other. Thanks! * I should have added aftershave recommendations that compliment each too.
I have Jeeves of Hudson street bay rum that is a great tallow based soap. A milder bay rum scent that produces a nice slick lather.
Here's a thread where we reviewed a couple of tobacco soaps. http://theshaveden.com/forums/threads/5-guys-3-soaps.44773/ Ever tried Clubman Special Reserve aftershave?
Many shops near me sell some or all of the Pinaud line. I will pick up a bottle of Clubman S.E. myself. I didn't know that was it's scent mix.
As always, Ginger's Garden has you covered, thanks to Irena's extensive scent list; while she makes a fine vegan soap, she also offers tallow-based 'croaps' in any of the scents (or combinations thereof) listed.
DR Harris Marlborough is a very nice scent which I think would fit into the tabacco leathery scent. And I agree with Mr Shaverman that Clubman Special Reserve is a great scent.
I've not pulled a trigger on this but here is a "leathery" Soap and AF you might want to try if you're up for it, it's from Chiseled Face, the scent is called Groomatorium's Midnight Stag, the scent profile is, you ready?.......... Russian Leather, Motor Oil, Hoppes #9, Birch Tar, Oakmoss, Gasoline, Smoke, Cedar, Cade, Bergamont, Vanilla
You know what? I have that one high on my list based on my love of their Sherlock. I'm also planning on sampling their Ghost Town. Thanks!
I found the link... http://jeevessoaps.com/index.php?route=product/category&path=18 Fellow vet here, so Veteran owned...always gets my support. looking forward to trying these out soon. New soap review time boys!
I am a wounded veteran of the war on drugs. Does that count? Not decorated though. No tattoos. Afraid of needles. Things that permanent scare me.
Both Cold River Soap Works Bay Rum and Bergamot & Bay are excellent choices as are Mikes Bay Rum and Mystic Waters Bay Rum. I'm a big bay rum fan. Used to not be into it but the CRSW Bay Rum has me hooked. Tried a bunch of others and the Mikes and MW are the only others that float my boat. The CRSW is nice as Larry uses a orange in his instead of the standard lime.
I have the shave den signature and Pyrate cove bay rum and ginger. these are my only bay rum soaps. I have WSP rustic shave soap tobacco. I like all the of these. although I love my other scents from, route 66 and soap commander(vegan). the latter two makers have fast become my favorites. most requests for my suggestions are gonna go there. ymmv
There are some great recommendations already in the list but Maggard's has a tobacco & Leather soap, the scent is strong new car leather scent, not as much tobacco. Another strong leather scented soap is Reef Point Aviator which smells like a leather jacket. There is also some soap maker that are willing to make custom scents for people, which makes it easier to get the mix you are looking for. P.S. Special Reserve is a great scent, but is strong so have to be careful not to use too much. It took me a while to understand and respect this aftershave.
