I will suggest another possible addition to your prep routine. You might try using a pre-shave oil. They are really easy to make. Here is a link to some instructions; http://theshaveden.com/forums/threads/how-to-make-your-own-pre-shave-oil.31132/
Know this, not everyone can go against the grain. You may be one who can't, just the way it is. I would say skip tbe ATG for a week or three, work on your technique, then try again. An alternative for ATG is a 45 degree passes. May help. Or not. Something to try.
Welcome to the den. I started out just like you, bad razor burn. I learned here that all of what I was doing was causing it. Too much pressure, bad blade angle, poor lathering, a blade that didn't agree with my face.....and more. Thanks to the help of these fine folks and all the recommendations they have given you, no more razor burn. Don't give up and in no time you will be getting stellar results.
Give your neck a break for a while. Just two passes and stop. No clean up no nothing. Stop trying to cut the hair, just remove the soap and listen to the razor. It works without pressure. And welcome!
im the same way....you havd to learn the growth direction there, and if you have only used carts to shave or a electric I am pretty sure it is a pressure issue...that took me a while to learn TBH, but once the light bulb clicks it is a game changer.
, as others have mentioned, be patient, use very light pressure and you may also want to consider unrefined shea butter to assist with any burn or irritation.
Update on my problem! Thanks to all the awesome advise everyone posted, my razor burn problem has gotten better. Im really glad that I found this forum. I would have quit wet shaving all together had it not been for all of your help. Thanks again!
I'd say if you need to change anything it would be just to look for the right blade. I'm still searching because I'm new too but I have already found blades that are miles better than that I started with. Just experiment. I also get irritation on my neck so I feel your pain
