I shave in the shower and have been thinking of giving a straight razor a try. Who here uses a straight in the shower?
Well, aside from the obvious issue of the frontal appendage and the tarsals bones that will tend to decelerate the fall when you fumble the razor, I don't see a problem. The damp environment will keep your face and lather better hydrated.
Damnit! As if the thought of a straight didn't already scare me enough, now I have images of me dropping the razor and seeing an eleventh toe on the shower floor!
I would STRONGLY recomend you test your schmuck fortitude by cooking bacon naked before embarking on such an ambitious endeavor!
If you haven't yet, consider a shavette. I did like many new shavers and got one thinking it would be easier to use than a straight. Mine was an off brand that held half a DE blade. Taught me much respect for an exposed blade. Now that I've moved on to real straights, I still respect the open blade. But I've not cut myself near as much as with that shavette.
Please no shaving videos . If your question was serious, I definitely would never do it. Besides the possibility of an emasculating injury to yourself, the razor would not appreciate it. Getting water in the scales and pivot of a straight will cause rusting.
On the plus side, you won't have to worry about explaining it to the EMTs; you'd probably bleed to death first. Yet another reason to straight shave at the sink.
Not something I'd recommend—even for the most experienced of users. Could it be done? Sure. Get yourself one of those non-fogging mountable mirrors and have at it. Personally, I prefer to SR shave with dry hands (surer grip on the razor)—something that can be difficult to achieve in the shower. One would need to be all-the-more fastidious in drying the razor post-shave. I've only dropped a razor once—pretty unsettling experience that I have desire in repeating.
Okay, truth be told, I have tried that before with no incidents. I keep a good grip on the razor and have yet to drop one anywhere. That said, I stopped doing so primarily to keep my razors from getting so thoroughly soaked. It's a chore of its own to have to get it completely dry after shaving when you can avoid some of it by being more judicious with your water use. And in that same category, you will waste a ton of water straight shaving in the shower. A lousy shave from a cartridge shaver takes only a few minutes. A better shave from a DE takes more like about 10 minutes. A straight shave when you first start takes more than 30 minutes. With practice you can get it down to more like 20, but less than that and you're rushing things too much (or only trimming around a beard like me these days). Just not a worthwhile idea. If you try straights, do it in front of the sink. Whether you're dressed or not is your business.
I put plastic down and mix up a lye cocktail to dissolve the body when I use a straight razor in the shower. *in my best Hannibal Lector voice* ^^^totally not serious about that, BTW.
The books are incredible, the movies great, and the T.V. show is pretty good as well. I just picked up the third season yesterday, but still need to watch the second season. ...and to the best of my knowledge, Hannibal Lector has never dissolved a body in lye. That is more of a Columbian drug lord thing to do.
