Tom- you just described my 2015. My RAD got unruly the last quarter of 2014. Mrs Samurai is a big fan of this thirty day rule stuff. :)

Neal- keep straights locked up when not in use. Especially during afternoon naps. :happy088:

Another automatic near BBS shave with the SS Flare Tip this morning. Everything from the lather to the shave just seemed to click. Finished off with a splash of CC Sandalwood with menthol added and I am off to work for a least part of the day.

    Razor: Maggard MR22/V3A Head
    Blade: Personna Lab Blue
    Lather: Caties Bubbles Ocean Grove
    Brush: RazoRock Plissoft
Post: Thayers Cucumber WH. Gold Bond Ultimate
    Aftershave: Folsom & Co. Capri
New razor head and soap. CB is always a solid! Ocean Grove is a nice fruity and floral scent. Thanks again @Herm2502
The Maggard V3A Head lives up to its billing. It's aggressive, but I found it to be a good shaver, no nicks or irritation at all. I did keep it to a 3 pass shave ;) when you use an aggressive razor its key that you use a soap that's slick, protective, cushion-y. CB meets the criteria. The gunmetal finish is pretty good on this head, one small flaw on the bottom of the base plate. I definitely could feel the blade on my face, so this is a razor that you need to stay focused on, not like the Flare Tip. Great buy! $10 including shipping. I'd put this between an R41 and a Fatip on the aggressive scale.

    Gillette New LC
    Rapira Super Stainless (4)
    Vulfix Super Badger (660)
Mama Bear's Soaps Black Code type
    Georgetown G12 Scuttle
    Pinaud Clubman Original

Decided after 6 days with the wonderful Strop Shoppe Baker Street that it was time to move on. I will wrap up my soap focus with one discovered through the Nation Wide Tour Box III: Mama Bear's Soaps Black Code type. Since I didn't have a container for the soap, I bought one from the dollar store, cleaned out the previous contents, and dropped the puck inside. It is a little too big and the bottom isn't flat so the puck moved around for a while as I loaded it. Spent 30 seconds on the puck, then went to the scuttle to build my lather. Was rewarded with a nice creamy slick lather.

2 full passes: Pass 1 XTG. Good reduction. Pass 2: ATG with a small amount of touch up. A cool water rinse followed by a moderate amount of touch up. The Pinaud Clubman stung like fire again today, but settled down in a few seconds. Still had a good amount of lather when I finished. Enough for at least another pass.

A nice near BBS from the Rapira Super Stainless in my New LC with the Mama Bear's Black Code type. About 30 minutes after the shave I realized that I didn't quite capture the baby, but I came pretty close. The Black Code type performed nicely and provided good protection. This is the only glycerin soap I’ve used this month. I found it very slick as well as easy to lather. The fragrance was mild and pleasant.

I hope everyone has a great Tuesday!

I know the central focus for January will be breaking in my boar brushes. Do you think one soap would be better than another? I'm thinking Arko maybe. The harshness I guess?

Honestly, I think the second shave is going to be more entertaining than the first. Wonder what would happen if he took a swig of the Veg by mistake?

I don't think what soap you use matters, just that you use the brush. If you are still trying to get the boar funk off the brush, try letting the lather dry on it a few days. That works pretty well on Boar and Horse. If you like Arko, go for it. Personally I think there are a lot better smells to work with.

I grew up on farms and ranches. I lived in a town with a canning plant. I worked in another with feed lots and meat packing. I've always had dogs including water dogs. My grandfather raised and trained race horses. All that to say that a little boar funk is the least of my concerns. I know it goes away eventually. Similarly, I don't get the aversion to soap smelling like soap. I'm becoming soap smell agnostic anyway. MWF, Cella, Poraso in it's various permutations, Arko, whatever. I more and more prefer pretty neutral smelling soaps like those so I can finish with any aftershave I want without regard to pairing or clashing. Even when I do like a smell like Chiseled Face Sherlock, it registers more "clean" to me than anything else. Even though I use it with Sherlock aftershave, I feel like I could probably top the soap with most anything except maybe menthol/eucalyptus. (Side note though, my kids gave me Tabac aftershave and I just don't know that I'll be able to hang with that smell. Is the soap pretty much the same?)

More what I'm thinking about is bristle conditioning for the long haul. I'm wondering if the wonderful lanolin of MWF might actually soften the bristles or the dryness of Arko might make them too brittle... That kind of thing. I'm guessing it makes very little difference one way or the other. Just wondered what folks thoughts are.

I re-learned a lesson today. I generally use different razors for head and face shaving - face every day, head 1 or 2 times per week. I forgot that my sparse hair on my scalp just seems to chew up blades quickly. Yesterday I loaded up a new Rapira Lux blade in my Weber and shaved both my head and face during one session. This morning I grabbed the Weber and got to shaving. The blade was sooooo dull and tuggy it caused pain. I quickly changed blades and finished up the shave in smooth fashion. So, remember, at least for me, change that blade after a head shave.

Thanks Clint! I owe you and the rest of the 30day group for my lather progress. I had poor lather for a long time before you all gave me your insights. :happy088:
