The first time I ever noticed my Pop shaving I was mesmerized. I'll never forget it, because as I walked by I looked in his shave cave, dug the action...Sat down and watched and asked questions. My Pop was into it and showed me every detail. And his daily 'me' time became 'our' time for a while. Finally he got me a toy super speed with cardboard blades and we shaved together...I guess I was about 4ish...
But onething I could never forget was his Schick Hydro-magic...all gold, shiny and his injecting a new blade and using the hydro-magic lever to rinse it out. Whats not to like? That was a 4 year old or experienced adult shavers dream razor...and is still "State of the Art" if you ask dozens of fans...
After a while I lost interest in play shaving every morning and over the years I lost track of Pop's razor as he switched to an L type for years...But about 10 years after that life defining moment of discovering Pop shaving, I was ready to start shaving myself...I bought a new late 60's Super Speed and at breakfast Dad said let me see the new razor. I proudly handed it over to him and he shook it. And as those late 60's Gillettes do it rattled and Pop smiled and said, "Good luck, you're a braver man than I" and I asked what he meant and he replied, "I don't know if I'm man enough to get up first thing in the morning and put a razor blade to my throat in something that rattles like a maraca, ha,ha"
Of course this took a bit of wind out of my sails, as Dad left the table and went back in his bedroom, only to return saying, "Would you like to have a real razor?" And handed me that Hydro-magic....He had filed it for me almost 10 years ago, knowing how much I dug it.....and the rest is history...
Today I wielded another early Hydro-magic exactly like that one....and the shave was fantastic...My Pop knew what he was doing when he picked out that razor back in the mid 50's....It's still as good as it gets...
