Even though my SS razors give me nearly consistent BBS's I still tend to reach for one of my Gillette Adjustables, As this morning, I tried for the first time an Astra SP blade in my Fatboy, It always gets a Personna Red, it never gave me a closer more comfortable shave, I wonder if there is closer than a BBS. Even though my SS razors will be handed down long after I'm gone, my Gillette's have lasted many years, I will admit my Slim and Fatboy could use a new chrome coating but other than that they still shave like they was new. I guess it's a mater of choice and what your used to.
I have many modern stainless steel razors and also many vintage while I love the vintage razors ALL of my favorites are modern stainless and aluminum razors, in my opinion the shaves I get are superior to even my Grandfather's 1960 Fat Boy, my Wife's Grandfather's 1965 Slim, or my 1953 Red Tip (which are my favorite vintage razors) my favorite modern razors include LA Shaving BBS 1, Weber PH, ATT 7-piece set, Feather AS-D2, and a Shavecraft 102 Slant. I personally feel that the build quality is superior to the vintage razors which were stamped out by machines. I have nothing bad to say about the vintage razors, the shaves are really good and they can be had at a much lower price so I can see why you might want to go this route, as for me I obviously chose to go both ways!
One of the biggest appeals of having the newest and latest and greatest Stainless Steel razors is... For the SOTD photo opp.
I have both vintage razors and modern SS razors and enjoying using both. However, in terms of the quality of shaves I prefer either my Wolfman OC or Mongoose. I completely understand and embrace the appeal of vintage razors both in price and the nostalgia of using items made years ago. I also embrace that business are producing modern SS razors as well. This gives people that what a modern razor choices beyond the usual EJ or Merkur offerings. I don't see it as an either this or that choice and own, use and enjoy both.
Well my Blackbirds give me better shaves than any of my other razors, but that doesn't explain the appeal does it? There's something about the heft and weight of a stainless steel razor, a solidarity if you will, that is lacking in most vintage razors. If you are the kind of person who stops and just holds and admires his/her vintage razors (and/or firearms) from time to time, marveling at the craftsmanship and design, then a machined stainless razor will appeal to you. The cost is due to machine time, tool replacement, QC time, and skilled labor costs. Also, small production runs.
I understand and appreciate the appeal of using a piece of fine craftsmanship. It is a thing to behold. And let's not forget, the SS razors of today are going to be the vintage razors of tomorrow...40 years from now. I wonder what they will use next? Titanium? some type of carbon fiber reinforced polymer product? Who knows...
I have an M2 from Stan and is gorgeaus and well finished. My favorite, nonetheless, is a New black and red. And my most beloved for sightseeing is a Feather model in wood and steel. Love that cool model and hope Stan dare with some wood. Wood and brass... OMG
Excellent '65 G-Slim... I make coffee in a 60's era RevereWare Copper bottom stovetop drip coffee maker. I even give them to people as gifts. I love my vintage razors... I don't even want to buy a new one, and I have read all the pros and cons, and absorbed all the advice on why a new razor from such and such company is so good... I believe it... I just don't want it. I'm new here, trying to be a good citizen and not tick anyone off..
And you learn something new everyday. My RAD was just triggered and now I have to go find a Weber and a Blackbird... I'm a sick person.
I've never owned a truly new/recent razor before, but at that price I be interested. If anyone ever does it pass around on that one, I'd like to sign up.
I never did get a decent shave out of a Rolls Razor. As for the Shake Sharp's, the Blackbird is a hair less aggressive, but shaves equally close. The risk of razor burn isn't as great with the blackbird. My biggest issue with the Shake Sharp's has always been the shortness of the handles, something that the Blackbird resolves nicely. Edit: the short handled Blackbird is comparable. I never felt comfortable enough with the Shake Sharp razors to go more than a month or two using one. Since I received my Blackbirds, I've shaved with other razors exactly twice...and I'm not a fan of three piece razors, which ought to lay out exactly where I stand with these razors.
