Shave Den Sunday! Planned SOTD - 24 January 2016 Ralf Aust 5/8 L'Occitane Plisson Synthetic TSD Barber Shoppe Shave Stick Alum TSD Barber Shoppe AS Splash Have a nice Sunday!
24Jan16 I've been rather scarce due to a new job. Up early, get home late, eat, relax, sleep then start all over again. Staying in a hotel during the week with a room mate and home on the weekends. I've been going 2-3 days between shaves. In doing so, I decided to crank the Fatboy up do 9 a couple shaves ago. Surprisingly excellent results when there is a bit of scruff to take off. Otherwise for me, anything over 5 gets too aggressive for daily use. Here has been my traveling setup. I'm changing it up this next week though.
A Grand Sunday Shave I used my Grand Shave King Self Lubricating Razor today loaded with a new Voshkod Blade. I lathered the CC Bay Rum with a Vie-Long 4312 Horse Hair Brush. It was the first time for the soap as well as the razor. The soap makes very thick lather and is very slick. To say that the Grand Shve King razor is mild would be an understatement. There are a number of things that one has to do for this razor to be effective. You have to get used to soap being left behind. If you are used to the razor head removing soap with each stroke of the razor, you will be trying to remove soap and not concentrating on removing your beard. There is a proper angle for this razor to be effective. That does not mean it is aggressive, only that it will remove beard. When you find that angle, there is great audible feedback. Usually I just swish the razor in a sink of water after each pass. With this razor I needed to run the razor under the tap to remove the soap. The CC soap was very thick, and that might of had something to do with the need to run the razor under the tap. Conclusion: The Grand Shave King Self Lubricating Razor is a very good razor. It is an odd razor and takes some getting used to. The lightness of the aluminum handle forces you to pay attention to pressure, as there is a tendancy to use excess pressure to compensate for the fact that there is soap left behind and the lightness of the handle. This razor will remain in my den and be used occasionally.

I'm a fan of the GSK. I get great shaves from mine. Yes, the lines of leftover soap took some getting used to, but that's why the called it, "The self-lubricating razor". Nice looking brush!

Sunday: hot shower w/Hugo Naturals Mexican Lime & Bergamot bar soap Shave Secret PSO Schick L1 2+ passes Gillette TRAC II (3) Dubl Duck boar GFT Essential Oil of Limes cream in a warm bowl Thayer's Lemon WH Pinaud Lime Sec edc A very nice shave this morning with the TRAC II blade in my L1. This is the third time I've tried this blade and I finally got it right. The first two times I shaved with it I got a close shave but it was noticeably harsh. Having bought at least 4 packs of twin blades I was thinking I may have wasted my money. However, after reading of others' success with these, I decided to give it another go. I think the problem was I'm usually a bit heavy handed with a single SE blade in a Schick L and I just needed to lighten up a bit. Long story short, I got a very nice close shave with no harshness.
you're absolutely right about Shave Secret. I'd left my last little bottle at my parents' house on my last visit and forgotten to replenish it (probably because I've got a whole spice rack full of preshave oils) so I grabbed one at WalMart yesterday.
I consistently get great irritation free shaves with it and it seems to moisturize the skin even after the shave. Smells nice to boot.
January 24, 2016 Razor- Eversharp Shick J1 Blade- Chick (4) Brush- VdH Boar Soap- Cella This is the first day I've shaved since Thursday as I was hit pretty hard by a cold verging on Bronchitis. With 3 days of beard, I figured it was time to bring out the big guns- the mighty Eversharp J1. Needless to say, the J1 did not disappoint- one-pass DFS needing only minor touchups and no irritation. I'm scared to think what it would be like with a twin-blade. Cella is really growing on me despite (or perhaps because of) the fact that my sample seems to have lost some of its scent.
Thread Alert ! Starting tomorrow we start a new SOTD thread HERE I will close this thread later tonight or early tomorrow morning. Happy shaving! Kerry
