Normally I'd wait until it was in my hands to share it but having talked with a few Gillette "Super Star" collectors who've never seen this set before, I'm excited to have bought it. When it arrives, I'll post more pics. For now, the only pic the seller had in the listing... Includes unused tube of Gillette Lather shaving cream, sealed blades, unused Gillette shaving brush and what appears to be an aluminum Tech. One of my Gillette mentors, Achim (aka mr-razor), notes that the shipper box is the same design as the 1963 British Gillette Mark II (aka Slim) Adjustable and the razor looks like the 1963 British Gillette aluminum Tech - so guessing this set is from 1963. I could know for sure if I wanted to open the sealed blades and look at the date code but I'm not going to do that. Anyway, a nice, undoubtedly rare set that no one I've talked to, has ever seen. Color me excited! Stay tuned for more pics when I receive this set in my hands!
Holy cow Jody! Where have you been buying your new shaving equipment from? (you must have some cool new British source ) That set looks amazing. I really like the design on the box! Congrats on the excellent find!
This fantastic kit arrived today! I'll be taking pics later on and posting here. Very excited to have it in my hands!
Well done that man. The fact it is a rare set is one thing - the fact it has NEVER been used is simply bewildering. Would it be too rude to ask how much you parted with to obtain it - I will fully understand if you prefer not to answer that.
Great score Jody. Very unusual set and quite interesting that no one else has ever seen one of those. Congratulations. You seem to have a knack --even if you aren't collecting them. Looking forward to more photos.
Thanks y'all! One of the interesting things I noticed is how the set was double-boxed. The black & white box inside the retro box. At first I thought it was just 2 different boxes from 2 different sets but then noticed the retro box doesn't have the full length flap closures on each end, just the 2 side closure flaps on each end. And they weren't torn off because there would be evidence of that. So that's how the set came. Double-boxed. A really nice kit. I wish it had a better razor in it than a cheap ole aluminum Tech but that's how it was sold and that's how I'll keep it.
Hey Jody, Remember how you said that everything in your den was for sale?... Why do I get the feeling this won't be on that list? That is a gorgeous find. You keep coming up with the neatest things!
It is strange that they used such a simple razor for that set -- but that case -- worth getting back into production with a case like that one. I wonder what it would take to design a similar case for etsy.com or some other site. It is really beautiful. Great score!
You're right I haven't ever seem one with the shave cream before. Almost all of the sets that I 'be seen had the aerosol can. Very nice. It's had to believe that someone kept it in this condition for 50 yrs!
