And by followed I mean that I found it on a vintage site online with pretty bad pictures, emailed back and forth with the shop, and bought it. It is a Cattarugus Cuttlery Co. Green Lizard B54GL model. So here is what I think, from looking at it. Not sure if I have all of this right, so please correct me if I don’t. 5/8 Square Point, full hollow ground. Pivot pin doesn’t look to be original, because it is missing the washer. (It’s also lo0se.) Almost no hone wear, but the toe has been rounded off. Striations in the blade are indentations, that almost look like part of the forging. They do extend into the tang. Jimps on top and bottom of the tang. None of the corrosion appears bad. So a few questions to the razor/ restoration experts. What is the best way to polish the celluloid scales, especially the insides? If I sent it to someone to re-pin, would they be able to remove the old pins without damaging the scales? Thoughts on trying to keep the patina intact? Any information on the specific model numbers for the Green Lizards? I think this might be a good candidate for a restoration. Pretty happy with what I ended up with, but wasn’t sure what it would look like when it got here from the seller's pictures. Here are mine: View attachment 69124 View attachment 69127
1. Do Not Use Acetone! I use a variety of known polishes such a Blue Magic. Thin cloth with a dab of polish pulled thru the scales can do the job nicely. 2. Yes, but it does take some care. 3. Glen @gssixgun is the patina wizard so that's a question I'd let him answer. 4. B54 GL — other than GL indicating 'Green Lizard' I'm not certain on CCC's model numbering. They do have several models, per the image below…. Variety of GL models from CCC…..
I've been using Five Star Metal and Brass Polish. Does a great job and won't harm the metal. Looks great.
Hmmmm That is a confusing razor I looked at it yesterday and honestly I am a little stumped as to how those lines got there,, I have a couple of theories First, I don't think they would effect the shave Second, I don't know if trying to take them out on the buffers would work, the GL blades are pretty thin so they don't allow for much heavy buffing Third, I agree that the Scales might not be the original ones which lead me to my second theory of the lines Fourth. The red rust has to come off, that is active Fifth, I see nothing that should stop it from being and excellent shaver
Isn't it amazing what follows a person home at times? Just don't feed it or it will never leave! (nice find!)
Initally, I was thinking I wanted to keep some of the patina. Based on the maginfied picture on a 21 inch monitor, I would say no, these need to be sanded and polished, so water can't get into the pits and make things worse. The lines in the blade are part of how it was formed. The are very noticible to your hand, and extend into the tang. Almost like three different temps of steel weren't quite mixed when the blade was forged. I agree they won't buff out, but shouldn't affect the shave. What are your theories? The piviot pin in loose when the blade is folded, and too tight when fully opened. You think these might not be the original scales? I was just thinking the pin and washers had been replaced. I want to get this one set up for shaving, and make it a user. I have a second Cattaraugs razor that also needs some work, and both are above my skill level at this point.
My duck followed me home a few weeks ago. Mine's almost cute as this lizard. Also had a WB Speed Rabbit follow me home. I appear to be atracting strays...
Where do you guys go and/or where do I have to hang out to get stuff like this to " follow me home "!!
Coulda been worse! At least it wasn't a Purple Minion! Sometimes it helps to wear a puck of Williams around your neck as you walk around certain neighborhoods.
