I only started DE shaving about a month ago but I tend to be a little obsessive compulsive. (My wife calls it hoarding, I call it being prepared . . . for a long time.) The bathroom counter got crowded so I had to make a home for my new hobby. So...... The wood is from an old cedar fence. The knob is an old iron ring from one of my grandfather's mule harnesses. I heated up some old wire and beat it square before wrapping it around the ring, getting the ends red hot and burning it through a pilot hole in the door. Then just spread the two ends and pounded them flat against the inside of the door. I planned the shelf spacing to accommodate the gear I had at the time of the photo. (that was four days ago) The hinges are just 3" strap hinges from Ace hardware, but I took a torch to them to burn off the zinc plating and then dimpled their entire surface with a ball peen hammer to give them a "hand forged" look. The razors are hung on nails I picked up at a habitat for humanity re-store. I think the were for a hardwood flooring nail gun. The total cost of the project was under $5 (the only things I had to buy were the hinges and the magnetic door catch) The Prince Albert can made a great blade vault after I used a dremel to cut a slot in the top. All in all I really like how it turned out. Unfortunately I just happened upon a great antique store today and expanded my collection by four more razors and two more brushes, all for $22 I might add : ) Now I'm over crowded again (somebody stop me please, is there a support group I can join?)
Great cabinet! Welcome to the IjustfinisheddesigningmyshavingstoragesolutionandthenIboughtabunchmoreshavingstuffsonowI'moutofstoragespaceagain club!
Man, that is fantastic! What creativity! ...and you even cut a hole in the can so Prince Albert won't suffocate! I like it!
Fantastic! Let your brush dry out on top of the cabinet when done shaving. I love everything about it! Where did you get the glass bowl? Is it a ice cream bowl?
First the good news: That is truly a nice cabinet you made to hold your equipment. Your very talented. Repurposing all those items especially your Grampa's old mule harness ring(did grandma make him wear the harness often?) was inspired.. Now the better news: There is nothing that can "STOP" the addiction, it must run it's course, I'm afraid your going to need another cabinet or two. The only support group we have here at TSD is to help you aquire more stuff so your Den can grow larger.
Darn nice cabinet! I love the way the razors hang, and the reuse and materials are super nice! It has one drawback...your collection will grow
Thanks. Yep, that's a$1.97 ice cream bowl from Walmart. I got the idea from someone's video here at TSD. (sorry, can't remember who, but thanks to whoever it was) It works great! I hardly use my mug any more. The base works great as a handle when your hands are wet. I even got a smaller one that is mug sized.
I fear you are right. I'm already thinking of a way to build a vertical rack made out of barbed wire to hang off of each side. I figure I could hang another 12 or more brushes or razor's off of each side : )
Thanks Awesome clip. What movie is this from? I recognize it but can't place it. I keep thinking, "I know that guy."
Orson Welles from his Citizen Kane. Really nice job on that cabinet again. From the reclaimed cedar to the customized hardware, it's dripping with character. And those finish nails were just the thing!
Excellent work! As 45Auto stated, vintage wood for vintage shaving....a perfect blending of function with 'old world' aesthetics. Now all need is a few of these vintage throat-cutters hanging there in place of those 'modern' DE razors....
