Hello all I hope everyone is well. Please feel free to tell me if I'm not being p.c. I recently made friends with a black man at work and I was discussing my shaving addiction to witch he tells me that he is unable to shave as in his words he has a afro beard and gets really really bad razor bumps and ingrowing hairs he said he had tried all the latest and greatest razors meaning multi blade Gillette ect. To witch I said they are possibly the worst choice. I have suggested a de saftey such as the Edwin jagger de89 Can anyone suggest anything else such as previously shave stuff post shave razors ect. Or is there any one else in the same boat the guys at work have bigged me up to be the shaving guru and I didn't really know what to advise. Many thanks in advance Nathan Sent from my SM-G925F using Tapatalk

Yeah, He'd come to work late, gunbelt thrown over his shoulder, spoon in hand. Hed say just give me five more minutes. I had to ask about the spoon. So he told me how he shaved. I really dont remember a smell. But he may of used cologne to cover. My friend plainly said it wasn't for white people, that it would break out my skin. I took his word for it and never tried.
He sound like a right character. I live in a small village in the UK and the guy at work is the first black guy I have ever made friends with. I'm not even sure if it's ok to call a black man black hence the p.c part in my first post. I will definitely recommend the stuff to him thanks again. Sent from my SM-G925F using Tapatalk
Good recommendations are a DE, never shave against the grain and Vanish PFB aftershave. I have a thick curly beard and suffered from ingrowns. Switching to traditional shaving cured me and in the early days I used Vanish PFB which helped with the ingrowns.
The best thing, I think, is to emphasize the benefits of traditional shaving for ALL men, since the greatest obstacle is the misinformation most men receive about shaving. It really doesn't matter what shaving gear he buys if he doesn't understand the value of applying traditional shaving fundamentals. 2 years ago I tossed aside BIC disposables for a Merkur FUTUR. Took me 9 months to unlearn poor shaving habits with it before I learned how to shave correctly. Last week I was surprised to learn that I can now get as good a shave with a disposable as I can with a DE. I wouldn't be able to do this without applying traditional shaving fundamentals. The point is, it doesn't matter what he buys if he doesn't understand why he's buying it or how to use it to get optimum results. Consequently, he's not likely to stick with it long enough to see any benefits. Sent from my Z958 using Tapatalk
And for soap, how about Stirling, Valobra Crema di Sapone Purissima, Mike's Natural, Institut Karite, or one of the other soaps that receives favorable reviews around here? Or perhaps Kiss My Face shaving cream? It is very affordable and widely available. And for a brush, maybe a nice Omega boar or a Vie Long Epsilon horse hair? And, of course, a blade sampler kit from Try A Blade. Just my 2 cents, for what it is worth. By the way, right on for showing someone how to get a good shave!
Single bade shaving reduces the likelihood of ingrown in any skin type. All men, and especially skin types prone to this issue, generally get better results with DE/SE/SR versus carts. There is a company called "Bevel Shaving System" marketed specifically to address the particulars of your friend from work. Encouraging him to try DE is great advice, you did well.
if possible, let him try out some stuff you have that isnt seeing much action...thats what I do with people/friends that are interested. and STRONGLY agree with what @SABOTEURw said....If they dont understand, they wont see it through.
Thanks for all your help guys I do emphasise the importance of good old fashion shaving techniques to pretty much everyone I meet hahaha I have got 13 people so far to swap from multi blade to ethier d.e. for straight razors and brushes. They all love it. I get questions pretty much every day most of it can answer but I came a little unstuck with my black friend he used to have a job where he HAD to be clean shaven and he hated every second and it was agony for him so the lads at work said have a chat with me and I was unsure what to advise. Thanks for all your imput I will put everything forward to him and we can see how he gets on. I will lend him my Edwin jagger. I'm not sure he's ready for the feather artist club just yet but you never know. Thanks again everyone has been very helpful Sent from my SM-G925F using Tapatalk
I almost forgot, Bevel has a shaving system that should help. It is specifically aimed at getting rid of razor bumps and ingrown hairs. Their website is at getvebel.com. Another good resource is Dr. Shave's Book of Shaving. It is produced by Executive Shaving Company in the UK, and is a very good introduction to traditional wetshaving.
I think this condition is called pseudofolliculitis barbae in case anyone is interested. As expected, using a single blade is one of the recommendations in the article for those who plan on using a razor. I don't have a curly beard and I have never once gotten ingrown hairs when shaving with a DE razor, but multi-blade cartridges are almost always prone to give me ingrown hairs, even if I stick to shaving with the grain. These days, I use cartridges only when traveling or when I only have 2-3 minutes to shave and be out the door.
There is a cream that you put on and let sit for a specific amount of time and use a plastic razor to get it off, thats what some of my troops used anyway, they said it worked well and prevented the razor bumps.
