Does aftershave have a shelf life? I've been thinking about buying some "new old stock" aftershaves from the 70's and 80's on the Bay but am afraid it might not smell good after all that time on the shelf.

People buy and use these all the time. I know they can go sour and I'm not sure of everything that can cause it, but I know UV light is the biggest problem. Avoid buying anything in a clear bottle. Others may have more to watch out for. But at least in some cases the older aftershaves can be just fine.

I'm betting that shelf life depends on how it was stored. If it's been in an uninsulated storage shed for the past twenty years then it's probably gone bad. But if it was kept in a temperature controlled environment (a normal house) and kept away from lots of exposure to direct sunlight (boxed up or in a closet) then it might be okay.

I wouldn't pay a lot just in case.

I've got English Leather A/S and Cologne from the late 60's and Old Spice A/S from the late 1950's. Both are fine as far as I can tell.

I have a couple of Old Spice Collectible bottles from 20 years ago, while the liquid looks a little funky, they still smell okay.

Thanks Steve! I remember seeing that site for the Old Spice mugs before, but never browsed it till you posted it, gonna bookmark it for future reference.

Yeah, I agree. If you are looking for a aftershave with a long shelf life look no futher than Old Spice. I got a bottle 2 years ago from somebody that doesn't like Old Spice (can't imagine why) and the scent hasn't faded yet.

The clue, like somebody sort of posted, is when you buy a new aftershave and you want it to have a longer shelf life put it in a dark and cool place.

Aftershaves, and colonges too, should have exparation dates on them. I'm sure others agree!

    they will go bad

If you don't store them in a cool dark place the alcohol will evaporate and the cologne or aftershave will still smell but it will not be the same.

Maybe colognes and aftershaves deteriorate with exposure to light or heat? I don't see how the alcohol or essential oils would evaporate if cap is on the bottle. Of course that assumption could be wrong.

    I live in...

I live in California we have a lot of distribution or whole sellers for colones especially in the Los Angeles Area. they all say the same thing when you ask them how to store your perfumes or colones. I even googled it, same thing is stated.
