Greetings from Morgantown! Up until now shaving was just something I did in the morning to look presentable for the rest of the day. I was taken in by the "latest and greatest" that the Gillette marketing dept. decided to push this year. Then the MLB Network debuted. I was watching the replay of Don Larsen's perfect game in the '56 World Series, and was intrigued by all the ads for the Super Speed. Google and Wikipedia led me here and to B&B, and YouTube gave me Mantic's video series. I learned that I could do better than just the "daily chore". I decided to take the plunge and go for the shave that my father and grandfather took for granted. I have yet to give the DE a try, but I have a 1949 Super Speed on it's way from an eBay purchase. Got it for $18.50. The local Giant Eagles and Target don't carry DE blades, but I found ASR Personnas at Wal-Mart for $1.87, and Gillettes from Russia at Rite Aid. After the weekend I'm going to hit some of the other local shops and widen my search of the antique stores and flea markets to the Pittsburgh area.
Welcome to the site. Lots of online sources for razor blades. www.westcoastshaving.com is a good start.
Welcome aboard! For most of us, the time spent shaving has certainly became an enjoying experience, and that superspeed is a great razor to start with. I don't have the best luck with the razors locally available, you might want to try some of the other brands out there (a good excuse to use that TSD welcome coupon too )
Welcome to the Den. Lots of great places online to get blades. Connaught shaving is another option. Paul has one heck of a sampler pack to choose from and the exchange rate is a lot better right now.
Welcome to TSD. I went to grad school in Morgantown several years ago. Is Pargo's restaurant still there?
Welcome aboard. You're off to a great start, and the great folks here will help (read: enable) even more!
Welcome, DarkAudit! Next time you're at Rite-Aid, you might want to pick up some shave cream by The Real Shaving Company. I use and recommend the Sensitive Skincare formulation.
I'm afraid they closed about three years ago. The building was torn down, and a Chick-fil-a went up in it's place. I miss their Hawaiian ribeye.
My fist Super Speed arrived today in the mail. A 1949 I bought off eBay for $18.50. Looks to be in excellent condition. I hit up a local junk dealer (that's a bit harsh, but he had anything and everything all over the place), and found a 1950 Super Speed plus a Blue Blade dispenser with at least 2 blades left, and one Gillette Thin blade still in it's wrapper for $15. It's not as clean as the 1949 one yet, but is in just as fine mechanical condition as the first. Grabbed a generic brush for an extra $5. There were quite a few three-piece Gillettes there for $10 each. He even had a slightly beat up Rolls.
Welcome to TSD. Like others have said you may have to do a bit of experimenting w/ blades before finding one that suits you. If your shaves are harsh using the drugstore brands I recommend getting a sampler pack online.
