This one took a while. The blade itself was in half-way decent shape; some minor pitting and years of built-up gunk. I hand-sanded most of the build-up and then used greaseless compound on the buffer to take care of the rest (85>180>220>400>600>Emery). The original scales were shot; rotted pins and crumbling, crack scale ends. So I made new scales from horn blanks… The wedge from bleached cow bone: Here are some of the specs on this final Wade & Butcher (pre-1891) Blade: 13/16 Square point, carbon steel, polished to emery stage Scales: Custom Horn, polished Wedge: Bleached bone Pins: Solid Brass Washers: Double stacked brass Internal Bearing Washers: Solid Brass This is one of the heavier razors I've put together. It does feels good in the hand (balanced) and comfortable in both the shaving and stropping motions. Next step is to hone it up…...
Yes! One of the pleasures for me of refurbishing old razors is the post-restore 'test drive.' I'm not always able to do this, but the majority of time, I can get at least one or two shaves before they're gone out the door. One drawback from doing this is if I fall in love with the feel of this new razor on my face. On the plus side, though, I know the new owner will enjoy the experience!
Wow!! Very nice Kevin. The blade is great and the scales are exceptional. I think anybody would be proud to have and use such a nice razor.
Thanks, Mike. These scales are the largest ('beefiest') ones I've made so far. Horn is challenging as it tends to want to twist when cut thinner. I had to keep this set flattened under weight for several weeks to get them to cooperate... Thanks, Kerry. It is fun and keeps me busy...
Honed it up tonight and had my first shave with this W&B. It took a real nice edge. Set the bevel on a Naniwa 1k, followed by the Norton 4k>8K, finished on the C12k (100 laps); CrOx on the bench strop; linen then russian leather strop (50/100). Very smooth shaver and quite audible. I really enjoyed the feel both in my hand and on my face. I may have to reconsider whether I wish to part with this razor…..
Lovely whisker whacker! Nice work. I know what you mean about parting with them. I love razors that "talk". I have a few. They aren't going anywhere anytime soon.
