This is a very common, aluminum handled brush from Rubberset; they were based in NJ (now Ohio) and still make brushes (paint). I have seen this brush in boar, badger, and in a mix. It has that art deco look that was popular in the 30s, but WWII put an end to the use of metal. I would say with 95% certainty that you will have to re-knot this; the cleaning process is going to cause problems with the old knot. Also you will want to paint the handle as well. Painting aluminum is tricky, you have to get some chemicals to do a proper surface prep, and then paint with a primer, then an acrylic enamel or a polyurethane. Good luck with it!
