Looking at all the great pictures from the various SOS threads and similar postings, I have been curious if any of you are enjoying the wonderful art of photography? Both as a profession or just as a hobby. So tell us what you shoot with and if you have any favourite genres, like street photography, penguins, landscape or just shaving goodies.
I take pictures for fun. No digital camera yet, save for the (kinda) crappy phone cam for the shave pics. I've got a Canon EOS 3000 and two lenses. I take mostly vacation pictures, but I try not to take standard ones. So you might see me in awkward positions and lying flat in the mud to just have a different picture. Fun is, the whole family likes to take pics, so when we're out and about it's often "photo alarm!" and there's three or four people trying to take entirely different pics of the same item. Nice to see how somebody else sees things differently than you do. The Norse landscapes are great for taking pics as well. On my honeymoon in the Hardanger area you could walk ten yards and have a complete different landscape. Love the country and the people (and geitost! - for those who hadn't heard of this: it's a special kind of goat cheese ).
For me it's mostly a hobby that I don't spend near enough time on, but every once in a while I get a paid gig. I shoot my third wedding ever in 6 weeks. I'm nervous as hell about that. I hate shooting weddings...too much pressure. I'm only doing this as a big favor to the bride and bride's mother. They couldn't afford it otherwise. I've done graduation portraits, family portraits, couples portraits, and...my favorite...concert photography. The highlight of my photography hobby was getting the cover shot for Vintage Guitar magazine (as well as a shot in the TOC) with a picture of Derek Trucks. Here's a picture of that issue (the photo looked better before the editor turned it red): Any Sam Bush fans? How about Robert Randolph?
That's just great, man. Even turned red Coincidence? On my way home half an hour ago (by bike of course) I was listening to the North Sea concert you sent me.
I forgot to answer my own thread But I have a few Nikons and some lenses, and at the moment I usually just shoot pictures of my kids. But I like to be out in nature, preferably in a Kayak, and shoot whatever looks good. (mostly self shots ) Sadly I am not good at it, but I enjoy it nonetheless
I prefer motorsports and wildlife. I teach monthly workshops on all things photography, both classroom and field. I am always shooting my shave gear, whether with simple phone camera or my pro-gear.. best camera is the one you have with you. I am a Nikon D3 shooter... more lenses, bodies and lighting gear than I can list... I'm a rank amateur but enjoy taking pictures. My parents got me a Polaroid when I was probably 6 or 7 which I used as often as they'd buy film for it. Then they got me a Pentax K1000 (completely manual 35mm SLR) for Christmas when I was about 12. I used the Pentax for about 25 years. It is a great camera and really forced me to think about how to get the picture I wanted. My wife got me a Nikon D40 DSLR about 5 years ago. I find myself using my camera phone (Motorola Droid RAZR) a lot now though. Phone cameras have got a lot better in the past few years.
I've been an amateur photographer for about 30 years. I put away the equipment for a long while, but have just started to relearn the process of capturing good images. I've owned many barands and types of cameras and I currently have 2 Sony DSLR's- an Alpha 100 and an Alpha 300. I've got about 10 different lenses, mostly Sony or Minolta. I love taking wildlife and outdoor shots, with the goal of editing the pics to my liking, then using them as templates for my watercolor paintings. I'm getting better with the cameras, less editing now. Painting, not so much, still have problems with blending, shading, layering, etc to the get desired effects. Since alot of my painting end up in various shades of black and gray, maybe I'll start painting skunks, zebras and elephants! LOL
Wow! I started out on a probably 10 year old K1000 in the late 70's. Loved that camera so much that I bought several more. I've still got the original. I, too, was forced to think about how to get the picture I wanted. That knowledge stuck with me and even with the advances in technology, I found myself using the manual features more than all the fancy preprogrammed, automatic doodads on the newer cameras. Now that I've dusted off the equipment, I hope that information is still floating around in my head somewhere!
My family owns a jewelry store, Once Upon A Diamond, that I work at and one of the jobs I do there is taking amature/professional photos of all of our jewelry to post on our online store and ebay as well. I also enjoy photography outside of work, my sister is amazing at it. I just do it as a hobby outside of work though. My camera outside of work is a Nikon and the one used at work is an Pentax/Optio with a macro lens. I have attached a couple photos of recent pieces.
I grew up with my dad always having a Pentax 35mm around his neck (he wasn't a professional just an avid enthusiast) I took photography in hs and college (all film back then) I got away from it for a while, then picked it back up a few years ago when I picked up a Sony A-350. I have accrued quite a few accessories. I recently acquired a Minolta Maxxum 9 film camera. Now I am in the process of building a darkroom in my basement. I enjoy landscape photography mostly. I just never have enough time spend enjoying it.
I just bought a Canon t4i. I have been a fan of photography for a long time, particularly architecture amd landscapes, but the main reason I bought the camera was to photograph my family.
Last year I bought a Nikon D5100 (DSLR) and I absolutely love it. I have always been a fan of photography; I even took it throughout highschool and excelled at it. I went digital because I can't justify the price of film and having it developed for 35mm cameras anymore. (I have a Nikon F65 SLR, but it is sitting shelved now) I love to take black and white images. Before I only did nature shots (color), but my heart is in the B&W. It may have to do with school, where I developed my negatives and photos in B&W. Hear are a few shots I took and fooled around with. I use Lightroom at home to develop my digital photos. This was the first good one - Taken in Banff National Park I noticed a number printed on a carton of eggs I had, that inspired this shot This is a walkway near my old highschool. it was pretty much pitch black outside, and the light in the photo doesn't give off that much light (thank you editing software)
I am strictly a hobbyist, but I just LOVE digital photography. I have 2 cameras, both Kodaks. The smaller one is a Z915, with a 10x zoom. Not the utra-slim type, but pretty portable. The larger one is the Z981, which has a 26x Zoom. Less portable, but better for outdoor shots with broad views. If I ever get to see Stonehenge, this is the one I will bring.
I have a Nikon D60 and shoot a lot of house pics for my listings. Lately I've become intrigued by the idea of dusting off my childhood Kodak Pocket Instamatic and getting some 110 film (yes, there's a company who's making 110 film again!).
I am a has been... I had my own studio for a long while where I did commercial photography, portraits, and shot weddings. When we started a family, I lost my assistant, (read wife!) and after the kids came, I just took family pictures. Funny, when I look back on those pics, I am never in them! My real passion was in shooting B&W fine art images. I used a wooden 4x5 field camera, then things went digital. I quit completely at that point. But you can't fight progress, so I am back shooting for my own pleasure now. I shoot whatever comes to hand, and I use a Nikon D7000, and a Cannon G-12.
G12... Great carry camera. I had a G10 for when the D3 or D300 was too much to carry. I sold it figuring I could/would strip down the D300 and tote it with a wide focal length zoom. I miss the G10...
I started taking pics again after I got a digital. I like sunrises. rusty old junk Old feed stores yard art Cows And a bazillion other things.
Argh, this thread made me feel so nostalgic that I ordered some B&W 110mm film. Oh Kodak Instamatic, we have a date!
