I have noticed two barber suppply storesi n my area. On of which does not want the general public in there. They require customers to show their hair salon ID's when purchasing. The other I have no idea about, will most likely investigate shortly. What can I expect to find at a barber supply store? Do you pickup anything on a regular basis at these type of stores? I have found a Sally's Beauty Supply Store in my area, my wife is going to think I have taken leave of my senses. I will investigate Sally's tomorrow evening. What i your adivce on barber supply stores vs Sally's? Do you think that Sally's is better than the other barber supply stores? I see on Sally's web site that they have some interesting after shaves, that I might try. Does Sally's do a special order on ocasion? I wouldn't mind trying some of the Pinaud products besides the generic after shave that most stores in the DC area stock.
Never been to a "Barber supply" in person, I'm not aware of any in my immediate- area, though I'm sure they exist somewhere. I could take a drive up to Appleton, however. As for Sally's, their "supply" of men's stuff is in my experience very limited and if you're lucky you may happen upon some Osage Rub (aside from the usual Pinaud stuff). As for special ordering, that would be a coup....
Texas Beauty Supply is where I get all my "barber supply" fixes at. Good stuff, good prices. www.texasbeautysupply.com
I've been to Sally's stores here in L.A not much to offer two styles of pinaud aftershave ans styptic pencil and few other less known brand shaving cream. you are better off just going to cvs or walgreens for pinaud. Dont go out of your way to sallys, but if your in the neighborhood look to settle your curiosity.
Sally's Beauty Supply is about the closest we have around here, and they're good for the Masters/Pinaud hookup. Beyond that, there's pretty much only the websites. I've never been inside an actual "Barber Supply Store" so I wouldn't know how it compares to the wetshaving inventory versus Sally's. But Sally’s is a good start, and should wet your appetite to investigate further.
I have another one not as close to me as Sally's is but its a barber supply store. Sally's bills itself as a beauty supply store, I guess this is where the difference lies. I guess the beauty supply shop is what I need.
I searched around the city for various Beauty supply stores. Finally just said f' it. Went back to Enchante and got the hook up
Troubble is that I can't say F'it, the only time Washingtonians actually buy products related to grooming is the women. Women have a very wide selection of hair brushes, makeup and shampoo and such available. We washingtonian wetshavers take what we can get and there is very little of that available.
Here are some Barber supply stores I shop at, over the internet of course. But, have bought from them, and they are reliable. Also easy to check prices. Maybe these will help you out http://www.bowmanbeauty.com http://www.carrbarber.com http://norvabarbersupply.com/
That place has the lowest price I've ever seen [$18.95] on what looks to be a Merkur "classic", possibly its a long-handle: http://stores.atlantabarber.com/-strse-131/Safety-Razor/Detail.bok And, they have Osage Rub :drool
Two other options is Williamsport Barber Supply in Williamsport, PA and Weiss Barber Supply in Wichita, KS. I think Williamsport is affiliated with the Stephan product line, have a buy 3 get 1 free on the Stay Smooth shave cream. Seems to be a pretty good deal if you like that product. Also like the Alpine Menthol. Also carry Clubman and Lucky Tiger/Sandahl's(barber supply line, not the Nordstrom line). Weiss are really nice folks carry a large assortment of products, including Feather blades & razors and Merkur razors/blades. While in this vein of pre/after shave I tend to think the Lucky Tiger Disappearing & Vanishing creams to be very similiar to the Proraso just without the eucalyptus, very menthol minty cooling. Have also had very nice results when I use the Lemon facial cleanser and Rose scented massage cream as preshaves. Also another nice product that Weiss had was the Sandahl's Brush Shave Cream(though not listed on their website). It seems somewhat hard to find(might not be produced anymore?) but is works great with a brush, and has directions for dilution for use in a lather machine. Has lanolin in it and to me has a "lanolin" kind of scent, but I often will mix a dorp or two of essential oil(s) in with my lather for variety. Is a big 14 or 15 oz tub(like Molle') and I think it is very competitive with Fraser's in performance. I like to check out barber supplies as they have some neat products for comparison to European products. Also, if at Sally's check out their "private label" generic line tea tree oil soap, seems to work okay for shaving. It lists use for shaving on the package, seems very cooling, etc. and priced nicely. This is for those interested in the tea tree experience.
I have found that my local area has quite a selection of beauty supply stores, with an ample supply of after shaves for me to try. Thanks for the suggestions.
Sally's was quite disapointing as forum members said it would be. I am relying on other beauty supply stores in my area which call themselves, the beauty supply store. Waht can streight menthol do for you? Waht would I do with streight menthol?
Just in case someone missed it in the other thread. Please don't ANYONE use straight menthol! Liquid or crystal form. There is a reason straight menthol is not sold at your neighborhood market. You should always research these types of things before "playing" around.
My understanding is if one wants his after shave to be more cooling then it normally is, add up to 20% menthol.
Adding menthol is fine, but that makes it a diluted menthol. Not straight menthol. I wouldn't advise adding menthol to a mentholated product, as you don't know the percentage already used by the manufacturer.
