Another new design idea trying to get funded on Kickstarter: Beluga. It uses DE blades but with only one edge exposed at a time. I can't say I have much interest in going back to a pivoting head design, but I can see where this thing might appeal to someone coming from the land of Fusion. And in general I like seeing these folks trying to come up with a really new design. Stainless steel with a micarta handle, made in USA. They intend to sell it for $150 but Kickstarter backers get one for $95. What do you think about it?
Thanks for the post. Interesting to see all these popping up. It seems that the "no pressure" rule would be out the door to get the head to pivot. The actor in the video clearly has no idea how to shave. I don't think it'll work very well.
Ugliest and dumbest looking razor I have ever seen. 150 clams for that thing no way, and honestly who needs a magnet at the bottom of the handle? It also looks extremely awkward.
Interesting idea, but a little pricey for me with too long a handle and honestly a little to the ugly side IMO. Also reminds me a little to much of a cart or injector razor, neither of which give me a good shave. However on the plus side it uses standard DE blades. Not for me, but it's nice to see someone experimenting with razor design..
Not for me, but I really like the idea and love the video. Kudos for not creating something like the others. Looks like a modern SE. Niché, ugly in a cool way and effektive (I presume)
From what I see, it looks as though it is a way to present the razor to the face at a fixed (Optimum?) angle at all times, thereby reducing the "constant" change in angle/pressure that I am sure we are all guilty of while using our assorted DEs. So THAT would be good, I would have thought. I presume that if one kept the head just starting to pivot, then that would indicate control over the pressure applied, also probably a good thing? Constant pressure/angle is good yes? Less skin irritation. More reproducible results. I am unsure though, how much the blade protrudes or if the skin is almost expected to slide/bend into the opening of the slot to meet the protected (only just) blade. I thought it looked a bit backwards in it's design to start with, but I now think it looks kind of "Industrial" or "Retro", maybe even "SteamPunk". I'd love to try a prototype, since it is getting a bit of early "negative attention" or at least disbelief. I KNOW they need to reduce the price, if they want to become the "new Gillette" or "new Schick" of the wet shaving reformation. For $150 I would expect a solid stainless Steel turned handle OR a bone handle (Even a bone sleeve over a Stainless core handle). They could substitute bone for some "Rare-ish" timber for anyone not liking animal based products. In fact, if I were part of this, I would be talking to a blade manufacturer and producing a specially formulated metal with a special edge profile that goes PERFECTLY with their razor and make more money out of selling replacement blades to all the Cartridge converts who would still think they needed to buy the "matching blades" and for the rest of us, we would have another (potentially good) choice of blade to use in this OR anything else we currently have !!!! Then, if we weren't customers buying their Razor, we could still be customers buying their blades I guess "the proof of the pudding will be in the eating" In any case it looks like it would Shave the Whales ok
.... So.... If I make this razor possible I would still have to pay 95 frickin dollars for it? I'll pass.
It's a neat idea, but to me it takes some of the fun out of it. Part of what I love about our hobby is the skill and patience it takes. Maybe it would be a good "conversion" tool or started when switching to DE from carts, but it's too pricey for that. To me it would just feel... Lazy. But that's just my $.02. Best of luck to them though!
I would try it if I got it in a PIF, but it's ugly, overdesigned, and serves no new purpose that I can see.
Agreed. This doesn't really appeal to me enough to purchase it at $95 or $150 but I would be willing to test it out.
Honestly, people aren't wanting to put in their on work. They're wanting everyone else to find their risk.
