Hey everyone I just bought a Savile Row 22 mm knot and ya totally amazing. I don’t have a boat hair brush and I’m looking to add one to my collection. What are the best quality boar hair brushes out there? Also what’s the best way to clean my Savile Row down the line when it needs cleaning. Just dish soap ? Interested in hearing your thoughts Best John
Welcome John @Johnnyboy to The Shave Den. Personally I've had great service and enjoy my Omega boar brushes. Their Pro model #10098 has a big fat knot of long bristle on a sturdy plastic handle. I like it so much I put one in a replica Rubberset 400 handle.
I cant say it is for sure the best but i have a semogue brand brush and I really love it. They make many different models I am not sure what one I have but im pretty sure you would enjoy any of them
The real question is; are you an Omega or a Semogue man? I'm firmly in the Omega camp. Edit: for cleaning brushes, I just use shampoo.
I have had a better experience with Omega myself. To get rid of soap scum I use 50/50 water and vinegar then shampoo.
I love the Semogue boar 810 and 830. They’re my favorite boar brushes. You might want to give one a try.
I have new and experience boar brushes and my favorites have to be the original knot Rubberset 400s, but there are so many that are also really great. In experienced brushes all of the Rubberset and Strongset and EverReady boar brushes as well as the Cased Badger (mixed Badger & Boar) brushes from several makers have been great. The Gibbs boar also has to be right up there with the best. In modern boar brushes I have ones from Omega and Semogue and Zenith and Marvy and both VdH as well as Surrey (the predecessor of VdH) and a couple NoNamis and some custom brushes getting new TGN & Omega knots as well as an old Rubberset 200 getting a new TGN boar knot. I can't really say there is a whole lot of difference between any of them or between the modern knots and the more experienced knots.
I have several Omega, one Semogue. If/when I buy another boar, it will be Omega. I prefer their knot density over Semogue, but that's me. Cleaning any brush ---> http://theshaveden.com/forums/threads/clean-de-stink-your-shaving-brushes.31353/
Omega for me. And that discussion will never end, unless someone steps up to provide Semogue handles with Omega knots
I have had Omega and Semogue. I only have a Semogue now, not because the Omega was bad but that it was enormous. I had the pro 48 and it was too big and messy. Still, really nice bristles and I'm not opposed to getting another Omega, but I'd opt for a smaller knot. My Semogue is the Semogue Owners Club with the cherry handle. They are supposed to be denser and higer quality bristles. All I know is that in a blind test between it and all my silvertips, I always think that the Semogue is a silvertip....its just so nice and soft. Now if I could find a way to stop using my synthetics....
I have Omegas, Semogues, and one Stirling. Ranking 1. Stirling. Soft tips with medium backbone. Great for face lathering, or for bowl lathering. Excellent handle. 2. Semogue. Medium soft, very light scritch. Medium backbone. Very nice for face lathering. Nice handles. 3. Omega. Soft tips, very heavy, to medium heavy backbone. The higher the loft, the lighter the backbone. Ok to PITA, for face lathering. Decent to cheaply made handles.
Yes, the Stirling handle is great, especially for the price! -- Pitralon forever - Real pens have a nib - If it doesn't tick, it's not a watch.
And Kent for hair brushes rather than shaving brushes. I've been using my Kent hair brush for 50 years now.
High their, @Johnnyboy , glad to have you here at TSD. You should introduce yourself at the Welcome Center for a proper welcome. http://theshaveden.com/forums/forums/welcome-center.28/
Kent for combs as well, in my opinion. -- Pitralon forever - Real pens have a nib - If it doesn't tick, it's not a watch.
