I use Borax for cleaning and de-funking my brushes. The Borax removes old built up soap residue. List members report using Scrubbing Bubbles for cleaning up old razors. Yesterday I wanted to clean my razor. However, we do not have Scrubbing Bubbles in our house. So I soaked my razor in some Borax and hot water. Rinsed and dried it . All the hardened soap residue was gone and the razor was sparkling clean. I offer this method as an alternative to Scrubbing Bubbles.
Not that long. Put 2 razors, one brush and a couple of table spoons of Borax in the bathroom sink. Added hot water till it covered the razors. Came back in 5 min or so when water cooled. Mashed the brush against the side of the sink and the shook it dry. I then was about to take a tooth brush to the bottom of the razors to clean off the accumulated soap residue and realized that the soap residue was completely gone.Simply dried the razors and hung them up on my rack. I believe Borax was used as an adjunct to laundry soap to remove residual soap from resettling in the fibers of the cloth. Seems to have the same effect on hardened soap residue on razors.
A borax-water solution is acidic and could damage nickel plate. A short soak in a weak solution might not hurt but an overnight soak might be a bad idea. I haven't had the nerve to try and see
Hadn't realized that. As I said it was only for 5 min and a weak solution as well. Good to know. Thanks
You don't want to leave your brush in borax very long either. I was letting my brush soak and fell asleep in the recliner . I don't know how long I was asleep . When I woke up the 30mm Silvertip had soaked up most of the water. The borax left a hard crystal looking paste all over the brush. That I had to take off with a butter knife.
Oh forgot to mention. Of course I throughly rinsed the brush and razors before drying them. Might be a good experiment with the Borax if someone has an old soap incrusted razor that they do not value.
I only use borax on my new brushes. Just habit. Borax not only cleans and de-ordorizes but its also an insecticide. (Just in case). After the borax I wash with Dawn dish soap. If it works on birds it would work on a brush.
I think Johnus means Dawn is used to clean up wild birds who fall prey to oil spills in water ways.Volunteers seem to find that Dawn could be used to safely wash the crude oil off the birds.
