I recently won an auction where I got a brand new in the box Ever-Ready 3000PBT Pure Badger knot and guess what I did? I tore the old knot out and drilled everything out of this handle. I have attached a few pictures of the process as I went along. I wanted to remove everything in this handle so that I could pour resin into it to add a lot more weight to this light feeling brush and I also wanted to expand the hole for the knot to place a much larger synthetic badger knot. I believe the original knot was a 16-18mm knot and by the time I was finished I placed a 24mm synthetic White Tip Badger knot. This is the handle after drilling it past the seal where the original knot set. Once getting past the seal the handle becomes hollow. This is how the handle looked after I poured the resin in to the desired height and let it sit overnight to harden and then applied the epoxy. I filled the handle a few mm lower then where the original knot was to give this brush a little more backbone because the synthetic knot is soooo soft. After this I inserted the knot and cleaned up any overspill and adjusted to make sure it was straight. There are two other brushes that I was working on at the same time. I placed the knot in the clear handle about 3mm lower then it originally had and on the wooden rubberset brush I sanded down the original finish and re-stained it a color I wanted and then used my airbrush to apply 4 coats of a high gloss waterproof sealant. The pictures don't do this brush justice. The knot is also a 24mm Synthetic White Tip. I hope you all enjoyed looking at this Brush Porn. I have about 5-6 other restore projects of razors and brushes that I will post pics of when I get around to it.
Here are a couple more pictures showing the two wooden brushes with their new stains and clear coats.
Thanks a lot. It has a nice feel to it and the 24mm knot fits that size handle well. I set the knot a little lower then normal on this brush so that you could have a little more control.
