My hubby has been going on for years about wanting a 'proper' good quality razor so I thought I would finally get him one for his birthday in a few weeks. There are SO many I have no idea where to start. I googled best razors and a couple that come up are Merkur 34 or 38/C or Edwin Jagger DE89. Hubby doesnt have a beard or anything really really thick, and he doesn't have very large hands (I think this may make a difference) No sensitive skin. I would like to set him up a nice kit but I have no idea what to get. I am in Australia and checked out a website called shaverhut and they have those brands that were coming up. Could I please have some help just to get him set up for now then if the razor doesnt suit he can change it later. Thanks heaps
The EJ DE89 is an excellent starter razor and is beautiful as well. I will let others chime in on the rest of the kit.
Welcome to the Den! Second the above. EJDE89 and Merkur 34c would be great. EJDE89 is a little more versatile as it is a 3 piece and he'll be able to interchange handles, which you can't do with the Merkur 34c. If you have the funds, look into a large blade sampler so he can find a blade that works for his skin, beard and the razor you choose. You may also want to look into a brush and soap/cream. After Christmas, have your husband join the den and read up. I also highly recommend mantic59's videos on YouTube. Best of luck!!!
the Merkur 34c is a fine razor, although I don't have the ej,I hear it's also fine. I would suggest pairing it with a whipped dog silvertip brush. they say customer service is very easy to deal with.
As the others have noted, any one of the the Edwin Jagger DE89 series or the Merkur 34C are great starter razors. For that matter, they are great razors period, and will last a lifetime. It would be a good idea to also get him several different packs of blades. Each blade has its own unique characteristics, and your husband can try the different blades and decide which ones suit him best. Here are some shaving kit retailers: Art of Man http://www.artofman.com.au/index.php Himage https://himage.com.au/ Men's Biz http://www.mensbiz.com.au/ The Shave Shed http://www.theshaveshed.com.au/ Connaught Shaving http://www.connaughtshaving.com/ Located in the UK, but ships internationally. Very large selection.
Wow thanks so much for all of the help, really appreciate it I will check out some of those links, the DE89 seems handier because you can change the handles so that might be good for him to try others out. I had NO idea buying a razor was quite this complex but I'm sure he will love it!
Does your husband have Traditional Shaving (DE / Brush) experience or will he be transtioning from cartridge razors?
The DE89 is a nice razor, I have one and can attest to that, but I hear good things about the Merkurs also. I think you may just want to see what's available in Australia at a reasonable price. The international shipping charges can be excessive in some cases.
You can pick up one of these kits on Amazon or sometimes Target or Walmart. I still use everything from it, and it's a great shave mug, and brush stand.
Welcome to the Den. My first razor was a Merkur 34 c HD and it is a great razor to use. Very mild. I still use it a lot and I got it on Amazon at a good price. Your husband will have fun with this but have him checkout all of the posts here on how to get a good shave. Go SLOW and NO Pressure on the razor. It's not like the carts he is using now. Also get him a sample batch of blade so he can find out what works well on his face. Enjoy!
I see a lot of people start out with the Edwin Jagger DE 89. After you get him started send him this way. We'll take care of him .
