Just signed up. I just bought my first DE razor, brush, and shave soap. Gave it a try last night with derby blades. There was a bit of tugging, but I'll give that one another go and then switch out my blade pack. I'm also not sure if I got my soap lathery enough. The whole artisanal aspect of this is fascinating.
It is. Not only tons of artisanal info and products, but also loads of how to advice. So much of this is how you like this or that, so there are no set in stone rules. But there are many helpful hints on how to make that lather more to your liking, or how to utilize your new de to get the closest shave, or what to use after, even some tips if you get to close a shave. You can search just about anything shave related, or just ask away. Oh, hello btw, and welcome to the shave den. Be sure to sign up for the newby giveaway, good luck.
to TSD "ElbertoHokie" I hope you enjoy it here. What type/brand of razor did you get. Derby blades aren't known for giving the smoothest shaves, but some people love them. Keep them they make work better for you alter or with a different razor. Do you have a blade sampler pack I advise getting at least one. It's good to try as many different blades as you can in the beginning of your quest in order to find the best blade/blades for your face and technique. Arko makes a great, inexpensive shave soap/stick.
Howdy, from Texas. One way to test your lather is to put it on your face, then press you cheek and swipe with your finger, firmly. It should be really slippery(slick). Don't worry about the fluffy lather, just concentrate on the slickness of your lather.
Welcome to TSD, a great place to share and learn. You're at the start of a lifelong, fascinating hobby. Regards, Chris
Welcome to the Shave Den. I had my first shave with Derby blades and it was awful. I found using a different type of blade made a huge difference. I hope you enjoy traditional wet shaving.
Glad to have you with us @ElbertoHokie -- we are all very curious about your reaction to traditional wetshaving. So, tell us what sort of gear you have and how you are finding your shaves these days? Of course you're right about it being fascinating -- the whole vista of possibilities begins to open up. It can be a very revealing process too. It seems odd (after a while) that other folks just put up with BORING when it comes to shaving -- so many choices!
