Can olive oil be used as a pre-shave oil and does it affect the shave brush?

Hello guys and gals. I have been wet shaving for 6 mounts now (Noob :D) and I'm realy fascinated with this great experience and with the awesome results I'm getting. Yesterday I have been reading an article about pre-shave oils and I saw that lots and lots of people use extra virgin olive oil as a pre-shave. If someone has tried or still is using olive oil, please tell me does it have some effect on the shave brush? Will I ruin my brush? :)

Hi Yavor and welcome to TSD.. yes olive oil is great as a pre-shave in fact it can be used as a shave altogether and some do use it for a lubricant. As for ruining you brush.. I have found that if a brush does become saturated with oil, this process can clog up the boar hair. A thorough cleaning seems to remedy the issue. So personally I don't use the brush to apply oil..although I do add some olive to my lather. Not sure what oil saturation does to badger..

Edit addition: actually synthetics might be perfect for regular oil application as the hairs do not absorb any moisture..

Not too sure about olive oil, but a friend of mine told me his grandfather used butter for his shaves. He couldn't afford anything else.

Thank you for the info guys. Maybe I'll try making a mixed pre-shave oil from ex. virgin olive, castor and esential oil. Adding 3-4 drops of the oils to my face before lathering with the omega boar brush I have will not affect badly on it I think. What do you think?

I doubt that will have any significant affect on your brush. It isn't that much oil, and your shaving soap breaks it down somewhat, anyway.

Not sure I'm getting into this as a shaving soap. May be as a preshave application?

Tieste has a homemade recipe that uses olive oil, me personally I stay away from oils... Its not cheap, but my face and brushes really love Trumper's Skin Food pre and post. ;)

I use the olive oil, castor oil, and essential oil mixture as a preshave, applied with the fingers not the brush, then lather applied by face lathering, this process seems to work very well with freaks, but not so well with soaps, however I've not had any adverse effects on any of my brushes either boar or badger, hope this helps.

I keep forgetting to try the SF as a preshave. How does it help brushes?

Hi Yavor, welcome to the Den!
I'm just exploring oils this week. I use it as a preshave. I apply it by hand and then start to lather up in a mug. In the meantime the olive oil (that's the only oil I've used so far) can marinade the skin. I kinda like it!

    Shave and enjoy!

Its not thick at all, and I haven't felt, or had any type of buildup from it; it just works well for me.

A mixture of olive oil, castor oil with glycerin to immulsify works great as a pre-shave.

And it doesn't bother any of my brushes.

Brushes are of no matter when it comes to my oils....my problem is an olive oil based pre shave makes me break out pretty bad...I use a mixture of shave secret oil from walmart and grapeseed oil theses days.....works quite well! and no build up in my brushes what so ever.

Yes, I've heard grapeseed oil by itself works fine.
