Hello all, I was wondering if anyone can tell me from experience if you can you take a shavette on a plane if you leave out the razor blade? The TSA blog only talks about cartridge, straight and safety razors but forgets to mention shavette style razors. Thanks
I don't have experience with a shavette. If it helps, I can say that I take my DE as carry-on without a blade and have not yet had any trouble with it. I've seen people have toys confiscated if they look like guns but are clearly completely harmless. I could see them do the same with a shavette.
I always have my DEs inspected, so have started putting them in the bin with my liquids. Otherwise, they open the bag and my shave kit and leave me with a mess to put back together with no shoes or a belt on, while 20 people are waiting for me to get out of the way. I would expect the same with a shavette, so you might save yourself some hassle by having it out where they can quickly see there is no blade in it. Of course, they might not let you take it anyways.
My guess is they will think it's a straight razor. Save yourself the hassle and put it in checked luggage.
In theory, you should be fine as there is no blade. However, that doesn't mean that any particular TSA inspector will agree and you really can't argue the point. I'd put it in checked baggage just to be safe.
Can the blade holding piece be broken down so they can see easily that there is no blade in it? If so, you might be able to get it through. It is completely up to the TSA inspector however. When I travel, I either check my straights or shavette, or carry a DE with no blade. At least the guys looking at it have some clue of what they are looking at there.
My experience, at least some (most) of the time is that when dealing with the TSA.....I've been completely amazed at how clueless these cats can be....I had them remove my trumpet from its case and I had a collapsible trumpet stand in the bell...so they took that out and were going to arrest me for it....They thought it was some kind of midevil looking weapon...I had to assemble it for them, put my horn on it...and I had to rip off some impossible to play licks to prove I was actually a professional trumpet player.....need I say more....stow it in your checked luggage...
I wouldn't take any chances on that. Not only can it be confiscated but you could possibly be detained. I'd leave everything in the check in suitcase.
As they told me one time; if we want to take it, we do. Don't put things in your hand luggage that you don't want to lose (or argue about).
Agreed. Anything one can do to expedite the trip through a security screen is time well spent. Not only for you but for the four hundred people behind you. Don't be "that guy". Put it in checked luggage.
Yep. If you're going to miss it if it's gone, check it. I lost a very nice corkscrew to TSA. I'm not going to bad mouth them, I've got a trip to take at the end of the month. Don't wanna tempt the travel gods.
Precise. So they can act any how they want and when the costumer is finally ruled right the flight is already missed 4 times
I have done (glasgow airport) they still question me. Not worth the hassle so I post it to my destination....or do without.
Never had a problem. But then I just say it does not have a blade. If they want to know the details I say I plan to buy blades at my destination. Keep it short and sweet and act polite and you won't have an issue. Well I never do.
I was once challenged big time over my climbing harness. I'd flown to Belfast from Glasgow for a two day job and took my climbing harness and all its accessories as carry on. Glasgow were concerned that it was a parachute harness and weren't satisfied until I'd worn and demonstrated it. Belfast didn't give a hoot.
