I just finished an exploration of seven soaps, of which three are Italian style, almond scented soaps. Very comparable with Cella. Since not everyone is charmed by tallow based soaps, and these (to me new) three soaps don't contain any tallow, I thought it would be a good idea to compare them and place the comparison in a table, so everyone can check the similarities, differences and prices of these soaps. Granted, the tests consisted of only one shave with each soap. The setup was the same for each shave: Vintage DVH boar brush Gillette Slim (birth quarter) @9 Schick platinum blade DVH alum There are of course differences in each shave, since I didn't use a new blade for each shave and since not every lather was of the same quality - for which I take the blame. Prices are without P&P and may vary over time and with different shops. The vegetarian soap and Cella will be replaced when I run out of it. Barbe rosse and Figaro are nice, but will not be replaced. If you want, you can check the complete seven day soap exploration over here: => *click* <= So, without further ado, here is the Cella like soaps comparison (keep in mind as always: YMMV): The complete file as PDF, to download for later reference:
Great comparison study @macaronus very detailed and thorough. Thanks for investing the time and effort. Very helpful.
Thank you for the info. Cella is a long standing favorite in my lineup. I'll have to see about trying the vegetale.
Thanks, guys! Thanks! I have yet to try that one, but it is possible that RazoRock Classic is made by Tcheon Fung Sing as well, since they produce part of RazoRock's soaps. Check the label.
Ah, sorry. Didn't know that. Does RR make their own soaps now? Or do they have a new provider that you know of?
They don't, but they decided to go with all artisan soaps and slowly phased out the rest. I do not know the various folks now making them. I do know the Classic is a new formula from the old one. Hard to keep up.............
3P is another Italian croap. I haven't tried it but Connaught has it. Another one to try for you Macaronus. RazoRock P160. I've been using it occasionally the past couple months and it's at least as good as I remember Cella being although it's been a while since I used up my red tub of Cella.
I really like cella. My only problem is the scent goes away after a period of time. I have so many soaps that its hard to get to them all. Ive had my tub of cella for 3 years and the scent is gone and now it has a animalistic type scent to it.
Mike, wonderful presentation! I'm finding that although Cella is fantastic you can find plenty that are just as good or better.
I agree kerry. Its a good soap but there are others that perform better. I actually perfer some of the razorock soaps over cella.
Yeah. That keeps me from buying the 1,000 ml brick. Thanks guys! Giving grades (A, B, C of 10, 9, 8) is too much YMMV in my view. Therefore I compared the new soaps (new to me, that is ) to Cella. I thought it to be a reasonably known soap. As to the better performers: please enlighten me! (and others who read this thread)
Mike, the soaps you compared Cella to are as good or better, with the artisan movement in full affect many blow the "traditional" soaps away. Of course YMMV.
