I remember the last time they came and I can't believe it has been 17 years already... man time flies when you get older... But this is the year and they are coming.. anyone else expecting them? http://saltthesandbox.org/cicada_hunt/SeventeenYearLocust.htm http://www.ext.vt.edu/pubs/entomology/444-276/444-276.html
Remember the old wives tale (Ray Bradbury used it in Dandelion Wine) that if you count the number of times a cicada buzzes in 15 seconds and add 39 to that number, you will get the exact temperature at that moment.... I remember doing this.. :ashamed001
When the majority of them have hatched, they sound like the flying saucers did in the old sci-fi movies. Initially very interesting, but after a few days, the sound gets on your nerves. Marty
Wait a minute, I remember when these things were around last time and no way has it been 17 years allready. Whoa!!!! Now I feel old!!!!
Our major cicada event was two years back, and they were all over! Since then a couple of wooded areas that they were in got "developed," so we might see as many the next time around. We do smaller emergences of them every year. When I lived in the southwest, every year seemed to be a major cicada year.
