Hi all I have another question. I may be aquiring yet another DE razor. A Fat Boy I am not sure on the date codes etc yet. I might be getting it tonight. The Question is, how do you clean these, polish them and Sanitize them? I have never done this and think it could be fun. If I can do it I may come into a few others but I want to see if it is something easy or something that is not worth my time. Pete
First boil them for about 15 minutes. Wash them after the boil. Then if you have Scrubby Bubbles or something along those lines spray the razor and let it sit for a few minutes then rinse. Finish a nice polishing with MAAS or a good metal polish and Voila! To make the innerworkings operate smooth let the razor sit in a bath of baby or mineral oil for a day and then wipe. Raf
I have a Fat Boy and I clean mine routinely with just a soft brush and just a spray cleaner like Oxy Clean or whatever. I know others use simple dish soap. For sanitizing, you could go with a bleach soak for the head or some people boil them. If it is new then sanitizing is a good idea but I don't bother since I am the only one that uses it. I probably will if it ever gets super grungy.
If it's really cruddy, boil it for about 15 minutes with a dash of baking soda (open razor). It's amazing how much cleaning this accomplishes, and will even some tarnish. With this process, the heat sanitizes it. When boiling, it can sometimes remove any paint a razor might have (like on a red tip superspeed). I would also not recommend boiling any gold razors. If it's not too bad, try a toothbrush and some dish soap. For sanitizing, I give mine a shot of lysol aerosol, then rinse after a few minutes. A note on sanitizing.... Don't hold me too it, but I remember reading somewhere, that most viruses and such that might be on an old razor, have an insanely short lifespan, and would die in the mail before they got to you. I think Isaac might be able to confirm that or not.... I have bad luck with polishing, and usually end up making it worse. A nice boil does wonders.
I dunno. Chemicals, I guess I can tell you this: The stuff works grrrrrreat ! Scrubbing Bubbles for a cuppa minutes then Soft Scrub and a toothbrush after every blade change. MAAS polish, every month or so. Thats all ya need.
They sell a liquid refill bottle to be used with the scrub brushes. I picked up the spray assuming good results. However, the liquid would allow you to soak the razor submerged. I could be over thinking this just a bit. Regardless, I have the spray for now.
Pete, All good advice above, tried and true, that I often use.I do have an ultrasonic cleaner that I use sometimes, gets the crud out of the insides. You have to be careful though it may remove the black paint from the adjustment numbers on the Fat Boy or a Slim adjustable. Cleaning up an old razor is worth your time and there is a certain amount of accomplishment in a job well done. Be sure to share some pictures of your prizes when they are done. Good luck!
