I apologize for my ignorance on the subject, but 'I often hear talk of coatings of blades, and I wondered what difference there might be between one and a Teflon-coated platinum. Or more. Are there particular characteristics that distinguish these different blades, such as life or better performance? Thanks in advance!
I'm sure there is a better answer than what I'm about to give, and I'm only coming from one piece of information. Voshkods are the first and only Teflon coated blades I have used. They are far superior to any other blade I have used except one, which is uncoated, or at least not teflon coated. So, there it is. Not a lot to go on, but my experience. I can only assume that since most stuff doesn't stick to teflon that it helps glide over the skin and perhaps delivers a nice shave. Other than that, I don't really know. You know how it goes with blades, YMMV.
Teflon. Any blade that is marketed as PTFE coated is also a Teflon blade. The only blades for me are Teflon and Platinum but I will take a Teflon over a Platinum Period. End Of Story.
My 2 cents ... I have used both. The Voskhod and the Super Max Super Platinum ... both are excellent blades. The Voskhod are teflon coated and the Super Max Super Platinum's are well .. Platinum. I get the same amount of shaves out them which is 5, without the tugging, dragging feeling. I cannot say the same for a Stainless or Super Stainless, four is the most I have been able to go with them. Of course, my real estate is different that yours so YMMV, but it's worth noting that you do get an extended life span with teflon-coated and platinum blades.
I use both teflon and platinum blades and I can't tell the difference in performance one way or the other. I use Voskhod's, Lord Platinum, SuperMax Super Platinum. I also like and use Shark Super Stainless, it delivers just as good a shave as the coated ones. YMMV!
Well PTFE coated blades were started by Wilkinson Sword in 1962. Since then many have come and gone. Some on the market now are: Sputnik Voskhod Timor blades Crystal blades Treet blades Wilkinson Sword Classic Black Wilkinson Sword Classic White Lord Super Stainless Hope this helps.
I know the two SE blades I've compared in my 1912 Ever Ready are the PTFE/Teflon coated Gem Stainless aka Ted Pella's against the Blue Carbon Steel Pal Blades. Gem blows the Pal's away, hands down !
I prefer the voskhods ( teflon ) over 4 other platnium blades Ive tried (astra plat , raspira platnium , crystals , derby extra ) dont know If its the blade or the coating but its a major diffrence
My water prefers anything stainless, otherwise the coated blades corrode quite fast for me and I don't get the extra shaves out of the blade anyway. Kai, Iridiums, Rapira Swedish Supersteel, are what I tend to prefer most. Even thought I just got the Rapira's they may be a go to, my problem with them is they're rough and sharp even stropped for the first 2 shaves, the next shaves however are great. I have an Astra Superior Stainless loaded today, first time giving these a go!
Thank you all for these valuable answers, now I'm definitely doing a better idea 'clear on this subject. Certainly will affect 'more' on my next purchase of razor blades!
