I've found myself in possession of a giant tub of coconut oil. I believe some people use this as a base or ingredient in homemade creams/salves/lotion type things and am wondering if any of you may have experience with it and what some good recipes might be. Any help/advice appreciated!

It can be mixed with baking soda for home made deodorant.

It's also good for cooking. but not deep frying (it's a healthy oil) and it's good as a body lotion and hair conditioner.

Google about a bit... coconut oil has a ton of health and cosmetic uses.

My wife uses it regularly from mixing it with her holistic medicinal oils to adding it to delicious fruit smoothies. I have out of curiosity and reading about it online , tried it as a pre shave . It definitely provides slickness. Probably why, as you pointed out , is in so many shave soaps and creams.
Many many uses, heck supposed to even kill lice. Never had to try it for that reason, but that's what I've read.

I mix it with shea butter (90% shea/10% coconut) by melting them over low heat & then allowing the mixture to cool. It makes a nice face cream.

You could always pour it on your porch, turn on the front light, and watch the fun.*

Thanks, I'll try that. How hot does it need to be to melt? Would a slowcooker work better than the stove do you think?

Yes, I know all that, Penguin. Which is why I asked specifically if anyone had any cream/lotion/salve recipes for it. Thanks for the helpful reply though. :)

Thank you gentleman, for the least helpful posts to my question! While that may sound like a sarcastic remark, it is not. You both win extra entries into my next PIF.

The average quality of my posts tends to go down in proportion to my sleepiness. I went to bed shortly after I posted that. Five A.M. is a late night for me. :)

Both oils have low melting points; coconut oils melts at 76F and shea butter at about 100F. I just use a little pot on the stove, but I suppose you could try the slow cooker.

I use coconut oil for cooking, soap, lip balm, and dry skin. My wife really like the soap also. TSD shave coconut soap is excellent.

For the lip balm do you add anything to it, or just use it on its own?
