A) there's quite a few fans of it around who love it, so maybe they'll jump in and give some advice. I only have one cake of it and haven't tried it yet, so I can't help in that regard B) where did you find some Colgate Mug Soap!?!?!? (my next trip to Mobile might include a detour to Doooothaaaaaaaaan, Alabama )
The Colgate is a great soap to me. Never have any problems getting it to lather at all. I bought all they had around here when I moved into town and I think That I still have like 7 pucks left. Here is how I do it. Soak your boar in hot water for a bit. shake it out and start by working a paste on the puck just dip the tips of the brush into the water and work it on the puck adding little water at a time until the later blows up. It is a great soap I think. Shame they do not make it anymore. Fuzzy
do tell. Colgate's one of my favorites. It's hard to find these days. Hey calvin! good to see you again. I didn't have any problems using it. However: 1. I never got a big/ explosive lather from it. It's still slick and protective; it's just that the lather isn't as "big" as from other soaps. 2. I'm always pressed for time when shaving. I wet my badger brush, shake it out onto the puck so there's a little standing water, and then swirl along the top of the puck for 30 secs. or so. This produces a useable lather. Won't win any awards but it works just as well as other higher priced soaps. (which is basically everything else). This is my experience, mind you.
I've got 4 pucks of it. One that I've tried to use and the others are still new. Maybe I'm using to much water but what I've seen, it just foams up like a bath soap.
That is why I start out with a drier brush then slowly add water. I do the same thing with my favorite... Williams. Fuzzy
Yea, I noticed that with Williams too. I don't know what I didn't think of it. I just went and whipped a decent lather with it. I didn't try to shave with it, just testing a drier brush with my arm. I didn't spend a lot of time on it either but it sure was a lot better than the last two times I used it. 'preciate the help.
Glad we could help. I love that soap second to Williams. it does not need mounds of peaked lather to work really well. Fuzzy
There is a big difference between the Colgate Shaving Mug Soap and the Cup Soap. I have the Colgate Cup Soap and it's fabulous, plenty of rich creamy lather and easy to mix up. The Mug soap is not as good. It's a reformulation of the Cup Soap, and like Williams, is not near the soap the earlier ones were. But it does work, just harder to get a good lather from.
I haven't seen Colgate shaving soap in years. I used to use it and Williams when that was all I knew existed and/or could get when I first started wetshaving in the early 1990's. I never had a problem getting decent lather from it. Follow wchnu's advice about starting with a drier brush and you'll be fine.
Colgate is probably my second favorite. I grew up on it. I haven't been able to find any in a while, but a friend just sent me some from his hutch stash. So now I'm enjoying it again. In fact, now that I've been reminded, I'll use it today! Alan
Interesting to read about but no one seems to have mentioned where or if this is still available anywhere. Is it still for sale, and if so, where ?:sick007
