Having too many razors and in the market for a new one this Christmas. I'd like to ask how a Merkur Progress long handle would compare to one of my Gillette Adjustables, Fatboy, Slim or Super Adjustable (Black Beauty)? I use the adjustment @ either a 6 or 7.
They are quite a bit different. For me the Progress is smoother and gives me consistently better shaves. I think the extra weight and the slightly different effective angle are the difference. YMMV though. I can get a good shave from a Gillette adjustable too but I have to really concentrate on the blade angle. The Progress seems to fall right into the angle that I naturally want to use. Both are really good and I'm glad I have nice examples of all of them. But if I could only keep one, it would be the Merkur. Lots of people will disagree with me though.
I concur, I'll also add that the shave lasts longer into the day. I've said repeatedly, if I'd have gotten the progress first,I probably would have looked no further. I wouldn't even have a razor collection.
I will very humbly offer to take everything except the progress out of your collection so you are no longer burdened with the variety.
I had a Progress short handle and ditched it in favor of the Gillette adjustable razors. For me, the Gillette razors are superior in both engineering and shave quality. Just my humble opinion.
thank you, but I do love the variety. also I've got razors my mom gave me belonging to my dad and grandad. razors my wife and kids have given me, after I became obsessed with all this. with only one, y'all'd get bored with my posts, and I'd lose interest in posting. so no, the window is closed. I've already acquired too many, and love the variety and enjoy the forum. I'm stuck with the bunch and y'all are stuck with me.
I like the design and look of the gillette vintages better... But the progress is a much better shaver for me by far
I think Freetheburn said it all. It's the perfect razor if your buying a gift. If your a collector and strive for rotation variety and love it like I do, it's hard work to rotate.
Thanks guys. I do admit that I get great shaves with my Gillette Adjustables, especially the Slim and BB not so much the Fatboy only due to the short handle and arthritis in the hands but I do use it at times. At first my thoughts on the Progress was mostly curiosity but now I'm giving it serious thought. Thought about a 3 piece that is equal to a 6-7 on a Gillette Adj. Maybe a Parker 91R or similar, that Progress is looking better.
I have a long handle progress razor I love it...it shaves like a dream. However shaving process is just the opposite of a Gillette slim mantic59 wrote a very informative piece on how to shave with a progress I found the article very helpful.
