Howdy! I'm getting gray in my moustache and in my sideburns. I had all brown hair up until a few years ago. The problem is this: Some of the products for coloring or covering the gray also can cause allergic reactions, etc. I have known at least 2 men that had to go to the Emergency Room after using a dye to cover the gray. Does anyone know of any products available that are considered "safe"? There must be some product available because women get their hair done all the time without problems, etc. Any recommendations are appreciated. Always, Gene
Try Just for Men beard and mustache coloring. It's just about the only product out there that will color facial hair reliably. Follow the directions. (which will usually include a skin test 24 hours in advance of coloring to check for allergic reactions.)
What Ryan said, but my advice is to let it go gray. Speaking from experience, it's a pain to keep up with regrowth when it comes to the facial hair and it's pretty noticeable when you don't. Plus, facial hair tends to not take dye as readily as head hair and the monochrome tint will be more noticeable as well. As ever, if you do decide to dye, go one shade lighter than you think you need and you should thus avoid the "shoe polish" look. You may also want to try the dark hair "tea" rinse from chagrin valley soap and/or eat lots of walnuts which purportedly can help restore hair color. I haven't tried it myself, so the jury's out on that one.
The Penguin has spoken, and I agree - let it go gray. I've thought about coloring but my wife likes the gray and says I look distinguished. Who am I to argue?
IA, it may actually look surprisingly good gray. Another issue to consider, regarding allergies, is that you are putting dye very close to your nose, so I suspect more would be inhaled (as opposed to dye on your head.) If the mustache & sideburns are the only place you have grey hair, and you are not happy with it, another option (my husband's choice) is to just shave it off. That gets rid of the grey, safely.
I think we are forgetting a very important step. I would go to my local barbershop first. Ask for some professional help. They can actually do a couple of things. 1) Recommend a good dye or you can just see what products they use 2) A style that can work for your new dyed look or for your gray look 3) DO IT RIGHT, you want to know what a good job looks like before you try it on your own. Good luck! Byron Buchannan
My beard started to gray while I was in my early 30's. I used a combination of just for men and clubman brown wax. It was not until I stopped the madness of coloring my facial hair did I realize how fake it looked. Let it go natural. I wish I would have years before.
For Hair....not facial hair....Morgans Pomade is quite good. Its one of the oldest English Pomades available. Gives light to medium hold and does not dye the hair. I am not sure of the chemistry, but it gradually restores the natural colour. I have been using it for a number of months now....and there is definately a change. It is more noticable when I have my hair cut. Initially my sideburns were becoming quite silver.......now they are becoming closer to my natural colour. It seems to encourage new growth to be closer to the natural colour. Once you reach you target....just use it less frequently as a maintenance.
I'm too vain to color any grey....Also I figure I've earned each one.....I've noticed alot of cats around here with grey moustaces try the 'Smoke so many cigarettes' it turns brown from the smoke method.. ....although thats one I don't recommend, for many reasons.... not the least of which....
I agree with most of the others here, let it go gray and to top it off a awesome handle bar mustache would go real nice with your profession (yes I looked at your profile). I did the color thing years ago and came to the conclusion it just wasn't worth the trouble. When I stopped dying the hair and the beard I got the girl (15 yrs younger than me) of my dreams and am now happily married.
+1 been using it for years... Last haircut my barber said' john let it go white. You'd have Snow White hair just like that actor. Of course I said who? He said: Cesar Romero. ' Right to CVS!!
