As the title says, hoping to bring this one back to a working “Beauty.” Simple plan of mirroring the angle of the old toe, and emulating the cutout at the spine. I use a dremel cutting wheel on a speed of 2-2.5 of 5, while holding the spine towards me with the wheel rotating away. So starting at the spine and working away from me. Safety glasses, magnifying visor, and a cup of ice water to dip the razor into… and I’m off. I have gotten into the habit of laying down electrical tape to help with eyeballing the cut and if the dremel skips, it just hits some tape and not the blade face. When I get to this point, the cutting wheel will start to chatter, so I start to roll over the top to finish cutting through the thin portion of the blade. The cut will be a little jagged towards the edge, so I hold it like a pencil and rub the tip along my worn DMT325. Straightens the cut and smooths it out. I turn to a small 180 grit sanding drum to make the spine cutout. 400 grit will work, but it takes a bit longer. Not too bad… Okay, the heavy lifting to shorten the blade is done… now the scales. To be continued. Enjoy your projects. Tom
Thank you. Now the decision… pivot or wedge end? I’m thinking pivot. I think the wedge is a little too long to mess with that end.
Sometimes the scales of a Shorty look out of proportion… not only do you have to reshape, but I feel you need to taper about 1/4 to 1/3 of the scale to make it look right. That was my challenge. I start with using the old tip as a template, using a 400 grit dremel sanding drum to do that shaping, and then taper the pivot 1/3 of the scale. Bakelite is pretty easy to sand, so turned to 1500 to work it from the dremel to the final shape, turning to 2000 grit to blend the whole thing together. That did pretty well. I then use the handheld pin vise to carefully drill the pivot holes. I was liking the proportions. I couldn’t quite match the wedge pin, but I went double stacked brass washers with NiAg rod. Not horribly noticeable. And here was the final razor… Centered up very nicely. I remembered I acquired the Torrey strop and holder combo, and I think this completes a cool look. And the shorty look like it was designed to fit. Thanks for coming along. Tom
So it looks like I wasn’t done done. Added polished black horn as an accent to hold the razor. Okay… definitely finished… maybe. Enjoy your projects. Tom
Wow ..... almost make me want to use a straight ..... well not really, but it is REALLY cool. I'm far too lazy.
