It's been forever since I tried this but a bottle was open on the store shelf so I tried a dab. It was the hint of a ghost of O.S. with some bitterish overnote that jumped out and lasted about 10 minutes, then pfft. It didn't even smell different but still good. Every alternate version I've ever tried (Blue Cross Labs's Mens' Choice Spice, Vi-John white bottle, Avon's Spicy and Brisk Spice) are all closer to actual O.S. than this stuff.
Kind of a shame. My parents were from New York and all our relatives lived there. We lived in Pittsburgh and would drive to NY a few times a year. One could see the Shulton plant from the Garden State Parkway and as we passed it, my Dad would whistle the OS theme. This would have been late 50's / early 60's.
There is Nothing like the real Shulton Old Spice. I've tried about everything that is claimed to be similar, or the same, and some are close, but not close enough. I've come to the conclusion that we may never see the likes of the Shulton blend again. So, I've been secretly squirreling away the "Real, Pre 1993, Shulton Olds Spice". I grab some when I see it for a decent price, try a dab out of the bottles, to be sure it's the real deal, and store it away. The wife is good with me doing this, because this is what she likes me wearing on special occasions, or when she ha had a glass of wine.
I purchased a bottle of New Old Spice and decanted to an empty old Old Spice chrome flask. Used it some until I found my first bottle of Vintage OS. Though my sense of smell has been dulled by professional workplace conditions, I do prefer the vintage over New juice. Still looking for Lime or Burley scent. They must be good since I've yet to see any in the wild.
I've never seen the Shulton Limes in the Wild, so I've settled on buying a few on eBay. The lime smells good, but the price, to me, outweighs the like of the scent. I bought a few at a very low price, compared to the usual Shulton Lime selling prices, and put them away. The best luck in acquiring the Shulton has been with the "Buy It Now" sellers. Some just list it for a low price, not understanding the current selling prices.
The prices of the Shulton Old Spice keep climbing. I just saw a 4 3/4 oz bottle sell for around $35. Wow.
It's OK to whistle it, of course, but if you want to hear the classic version, find the one with the French Horns.
I have no issues with the modern P&G Old Spice, I have Shulton Old Spice and the original Indian Old Spice before production was moved. It all smells very similar. European Old Spice is still in glass or ceramic.
I sometimes think that a psychology effect is at play here as with New Coke. Everyone loved it, until they were told it wasn't genuine Coco Cola.
How does Lustray Blue Spice rate to the conesures (I'm sure I misspelled that). Experts. I've several bottles of old spice from different vintages. Most smell nice to me. My wife on the other hand, dislikes most of my os stock. She does like the men's choice (which to my nose smells of ginger snaps), and likes blue spice the most. She says the old spice smells old, as in past its prime (not that it smells like a old guy would wear, but old like its sat on a shelf for ten or twenty years). I feel like the dollar store version smells like i remember my dad wearing, but it doesn't last more than an hour or two. (She also is more tolerant of that than the vintages). So any of you who know, tried Blue spice?
These are aftershaves, not EDT's. I haven't seen a vintage advert for Brut aftershave, maybe all our fathers were wearing EDT's or a splash in the case of Brut 33.
